You didn’t ask for it, but Twitter has started to present tweets from the people you follow out of order.

Last month Twitter announced that they would be offering a new option that would let users view their timeline out of order. Twitter claimed that this would help you only see the best tweets, but there’s one problem: People use Twitter because it’s in real-time. We want to know what’s happening now, not what happened 12 hours ago. We want to see breaking news, we want to read tweets from those who are watching the same live TV shows, and we want to live in the “now.”

Twitter users threw a fit when the out-of-order timeline was announced, and CEO Jack Dorsey jumped in to say that they wouldn’t be changing the Twitter experience… for the time being. “You all got angry for nothing!” he basically said.

But now we have a reason to be angry.

Twitter has begun sorting timelines out of order by default, we’ve confirmed. The roll-out appears to have begun this week. Twitter doesn’t care if you complained about it — they’re turning it on whether you asked for it or not.

Luckily, you can switch back to the reverse chronological order timeline that you’ve grown accustomed to. To do so, follow these instructions:

It’ll be interesting to see how many people keep the out-of-order timeline versus how many people revert back to reverse-chronological. Which option will you go with?

If you’re reading tweets out of order, isn’t the Twitter experience damaged? For example, what happens if someone posts a few tweets in a row with one line of thinking? Another problem: What does this mean for avoiding TV spoilers?

The news comes only two days after Instagram announced that they would begin displaying your Insta feed out of order.

It’s a bad year for all of us who like our feeds in order.
