Hulu has released the first trailer for the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and it looks like things are getting crazy in Gilead.

Fans were enraptured by Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. The series wonderfully took Gilead and the world found within the pages of Atwood’s work onto the small screen. However, the show was able to follow Atwood’s book pretty closely in season 1; season 2 will be entirely new content.

In the teaser trailer released by Hulu, we see that season 2 will take us beyond the boundaries of Gilead. Not only will we follow Samira Wiley’s character, Moira, as she joins O-T Fagbenle’s character, Luke, in Canada, but we’ll also get a peek at the much-feared wasteland known as “The Colonies.”

It is interesting to get our first glimpses of the Colonies, as both the book and the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale only refer the barren wasteland. And though it wasn’t really touched on in the series, fans of the original book know that Offred’s mother is believed to be in the Colonies (if she is still alive). Maybe the expanded universe will allow us the chance to meet Offred’s mother.

As for Offred, last season ended with Nick taking Offred away, but it was unclear where he was taking her, specifically. However, after seeing images in the trailer of Offred with her mouth covered just like Offglen’s was when she was sent to court (and was that a noose around her neck?!), it seems like Offred is still very much stuck in Gilead’s oppressive grasp. Of course, last season also revealed that Offred is pregnant, so it will be exciting to see how she fights for the freedom of her future child.

The Handmaid’s Tale should release on Hulu in the spring of 2018, and we can’t wait!
