Since Tom Hiddleston’s name was floated as the next James Bond, the internet has pretty much accepted the idea. But Hiddleston himself isn’t so sure.

While we’re still waiting for Daniel Craig’s official resignation notice, it’s almost certain that the four-times James Bond actor won’t be back for another round.

Between his extremely negative press campaign for Spectre, and the news that Sam Mendes is stepping down as director, Craig’s run as Bond is almost certainly at an end.

So who will replace him? Despite fan campaigns hoping for a black Bond (or perhaps a female 007), the hot rumor going around is that James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is in “advanced talks” with Marvel’s Tom Hiddleston for the coveted role.

Despite Sam Mendes saying the casting would “not be what you expect,” and Hiddleston himself saying on The Graham Norton Show that he hadn’t been approached, Hiddleston’s inherent Bond-ness made his casting seem so likely and no one’s really questioned it.

But now, Tom Hiddleston has once again come out to deny the rumors. At Wizard World Philadelphia, Hiddleston told the crowd (via Comic Book Resources):

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody. I don’t think that announcement is coming. But I’m very gratified to hear the enthusiasm.”

Does this mean that Idris Elba still has a chance? Or is Hiddleston merely trying to throw us off the scent?

After all, if alleged director frontrunner Susanne Bier does indeed end up helming Bond 25, Tom Hiddleston’s chances increase tenfold: Bier already directed Hiddleston in The Night Manager, where he plays a very 007-esque character.
