There’s James Bond, and then there’s the Bond Girls. But if she can’t be 007, Quantico lead Priyanka Chopra has no interest in being the latter.
Since the news that Daniel Craig is likely stepping down from the James Bond saga, instead signing up for a U.S. TV series titled Purity, fans have been busy fantasy casting the next generation 007.
After 24 Bond films, will they finally cast a person of color? Idris Elba has been a fan favorite for years, and we’re still holding out hope for the talented Luther actor.
Or will the new Bond perhaps be a woman? Gillian Anderson has emerged as a popular choice over the last few days, with her retweeted “Jane Bond” fanart garnering over 10,000 retweets.
Perhaps the James Bond producers should turn their attention to Quantico star Priyanka Chopra, who seems to have thrown her name into the ring (or at least raised a challenge flag against the supposition that James Bond needs to be white and male in order to retain his ‘James Bond-ness’).
During an interview with Complex, Chopra was told that she’d make a great Bond girl. Her response? “I get that all the time. But fuck that —- I wanna be Bond.”
Chopra, who is also playing a villain in the upcoming Baywatch movie (a part originally written for a man), spoke further about her desire to be seen “as just an actor,” rather than being judged by her gender and ethnicity.
“I think global entertainment needs to become like that. It needs to be about the best person for the job rather than what you look like or where you come from,” she said. “I want to be able to break the stereotype of what Indian people or people of South Asian descent are supposed to be. Nobody’s supposed to be anything. You can be whoever you want. And I want young people to see that.”
That’s a sentiment we can definitely get behind!
