Biopics are all the rage these days, so it makes complete sense that someone would want to put together a film about Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien.

The film will be called Middle Earth, and it’ll explore the events that led the famed author to develop The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

According to Deadline, British director James Strong will be helming the project.

Strong is known for Broadchurch and Downton Abbey on the television side of the industry, as well as the feature film United from 2011.

Angus Fletcher will write the script. The report states that Fletcher has “gathered materials on Tolkien through six years of archival research and personal interviews.”

Former New Line Cinema leaders Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, who gave Peter Jackson the go-ahead for the Hobbit movies, will be producing Middle Earth. Though the films were met with some criticism from critics and fans alike, there’s no denying the franchise went on to gross a fair bit of money and become commercially successful.

The report also gives a basic synopsis of the film:

Story follows Tolkien’s early life and love affair with Edith Bratt, whom he later married. The couple lived happily in Oxford, surrounded by friends, but when war broke out in 1914 Tolkien embarked on four years of battle and hardship, an experience that influenced his Middle Earth stories.

A biopic about Tolkien will no doubt intrigue fans, especially those who may have skipped the book and have just become fans of the film franchise. It’ll allow the legacy of Lord of the Rings to continue on in a different way.

Speaking of biopics, on Friday we learned that Rami Malek will be portraying Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Other biographical films in the works include Warhol, which will star Jared Leto as the eccentric artist, and The Happy Prince, which will see Rupert Everett portraying Oscar Wilde.
