The Walking Dead‘s fan favourite, Norman Reedus, has discussed the parallels seen between Rick and The Governor’s groups, as well as Caesar Martinez and the continuing rumours of a relationship between Daryl and Carol.

The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus sat down for an interview over the phone with The Walker Stalkers and discussed the ideology behind 3×13 “Arrow on the Doorpost” which aired this past Sunday over on AMC. And they’re kindly provided the entire interview for you right here.

When asked about the contrasts between Rick’s group and The Governor’s, Reedus gave a thoughtful answer of the imagery and dialogue shown throughout the episode. Reedus said, “The whole point of all of that, with Hershel talking with Daryl, is to show these two figureheads in this barn hashing up the future of the people, but you know, deep down all these people; because of the situation forced to hate each other, but they really don’t even know each other and it’s all just about to go down, and they wouldn’t go to war.”

“You know…like in the early World Wars, people on battlefields used to go and you know, play games, card games, with who they’re going to fight the next day in battle, and then they’d retreat to their sections of the field and they’d charge and kill each other. It was that kind of vibe to show that everyone is just people. It’s the situation that we’re forced under and it also weighs on more Rick than The Governor, ’cause he’s an asshole and doesn’t care. Rick’s got real people and he’s making decisions for and about, and it’s weighing heavy on him, and the whole thing about Michonne and so forth.”

“He’s got big guns, a baseball bat and a smirk!”

Reedus was seen squaring off with Caesar Martinez, the equivalent of Daryl over in Woodbury. They had their little dance, sizing each other up, by killing walkers with Daryl eventually winning, but taking out just as many walkers, if not more, and then stealing Martinez’s last zombie kill, with a throwing knife to the head.

Although Daryl and Martinez sized each other up, Reedus’s words echoed in the sense that they’d shared a pack of cigarrettes much akin to his words of the people in battlefields playing card games with each other. Reedus is absolutely true when examining the evidence that they are going to be at war through the situation their in, and not the people individually.

Reedus was then asked about Martinez in which he replied, “I really like Jose [Cantillo], he’s a cool guy. He’s got big guns, a baseball bat and a smirk!” There’s never a dull moment in an interview with Reedus, is there?

But, the highlight of the interview came in Reedus answering the question that has been on fans’ minds for quite some time, the reluctant-like relationship between Daryl and Carol. There’s clearly some romance between the pair, but it’s still a significance which hasn’t been explored to its full extent lately. But what did Reedus have to say about the future regarding Daryl and Carol?

Reedus joked, “Daryl nails her!” before answering the question a little more seriously.

“I can’t really tell you that, that’s a spoiler alert. I read this thing that Laurie Holden was talking about, she was talking about there’s already a thing there. I mean, there’s already a relationship there, whether we hook up or not. I’ve always said I like the fact that we’re together for other reasons and there’s a connection there, and it’s damage.”

Could the writers explore the relationship of Daryl and Carol later on in the series? Will they even have the chance to with The Walking Dead season 3 finale just a few weeks away? And, what are your thoughts on Reedus’s performance as Daryl?

Reedus returns as Daryl this Sunday evening on AMC in The Walking Dead 3×14 “Prey” at 9pm ET/PT.
