The Walking Dead TV series has seen a ton of characters come and go.

It’s a fact that we understand and accept as fans due to the premise of the show. But, the magnitude of death isn’t really realized until we take a trip down memory lane and watch a few previous episodes.

It’s sad to look back at season 1 and notice that almost everyone in the original camp is dead. At this point, only Rick, Carol, Daryl, and Morgan (he’s still in the universe so he counts) are the only people still left from The Walking Dead‘s debut season.

And, it gets even darker when you realize that entire families have been wiped out during the series.

Here’s a look back at a few families that were wiped out during the apocalypse:

The Morales Family

Yes, Morales was his last name. His wife and two children were essentially sentenced to death the moment that Morales made the dumb decision to go looking for his family in another state.

How far did he really think he would get with a vehicle and one gun?! We barely knew his family, but a ton of fans wondered if they made it to Alabama and if Morales would ever appear on the show again.

The Walking Dead hilariously satisfied their curiosity by bringing him back last season only to kill him moments later. The moment also confirmed what we already knew – his sweet family bit the dust a while back.

It put an end to constant speculation about his return and wiped out the Morales family.

The Harrisons

Andrea and Amy were seemingly the only ones left in their immediate family. The sisters were on a road trip and became stranded in Georgia when the world went nuts, so no one knows if their Florida relatives are still alive.

Unlike Morales, they did the smart thing and stuck with the group, but Amy died about halfway through season 1 during the walker attack at their initial camp. This caused Andrea to have an emotional spiral but she eventually recovered and gave us the greatest gift of all – Michonne.

Andrea’s death in the season 3 finale wiped out this family for good, which wasn’t too sad for many fans who thought the TV version of the character didn’t measure up to her lengthy comic arc.

Ryan, Lizzie, and Mika Samuels

The Samuels family is perhaps the saddest set of family deaths in the TV show. Ryan (along with most of the Woodbury refugees) died during the virus outbreak at the prison during season 4.

As expected, it took a toll on his daughters Lizzie and Mika as they looked to Carol (who was morally questionable at best) for guidance. Unfortunately, the girls both met heart wrenching demises after Lizzie killed Mika to prove that rotting, flesh-eating walkers aren’t different from humans.

Lizzie’s death is one of the most memorable moments in Walking Dead TV history with Carol telling her to “look at the flowers” and then shooting her in the back of the head. RIP Samuels gang.

Sasha and Tyreese Williams

Walking Dead deaths seem to get the best of siblings. Fans met Sasha and Tyreese during the prison arc and they both became valued assets amongst Rick’s clan. The brother and sister duo often bumped heads because of their dueling philosophies about this new and chaotic world.

Generally speaking, Sasha and Tyreese actually had some longevity on the series. Tyreese met his demise in season 5 when he was attacked by a couple of stealthy walkers and had to wait entirely too long for someone to chop off his arm.

Sasha was never quite the same after losing her brother (and all her boyfriends) and eventually sacrificed her life (unnecessarily) to jump-start All-Out War.

Oh Sasha…you just wanted to kill Negan and he’s STILL alive. I hope your ghost haunts Rick and Michonne every night.

Deanna Monroe and her clan

Deanna, Reg, Aiden, and Spencer were the first family of Alexandria. The former Congresswoman turned community leader was oblivious to the dangers lurking outside their walls until crazy Rick showed up and told everyone what was going down in the real world.

Deanna’s relentless optimism was challenged when Pete accidentally murdered poor Reg in front of a group but she still believed in building a new world and expansion. The parents in this family seemed like decent people, so it’s amazing that they gave birth to two terrible sons.

Aiden and Nicholas were selfish supply runners who coldly allowed others to be killed to save their own skins. They were whiners, bullies, and their Walking Dead deaths were super satisfying. After all, no one in the fandom misses these fools.

Aiden got taken out during a supply run when he was impaled by bars and torn apart by walkers while Spencer was gutted by Negan for being a disloyal snitch. It was what they deserved.

The Andersons

Oh look, an entire family of irritating and useless people. Jessie, Ron, Sam, and Pete were Alexandria residents with trouble brewing in their household.

The show heavily implied that Pete was abusive to his wife and sons. His excessive drinking and big mouth led to several confrontations with Rick and caused his eventual execution.

By then, Jessie already had her eyes set on Rick as a new boo which (thankfully) never really took place. Meanwhile, Ron was dead set on hurting Rick and/or Carl and Sam spent most of his free time annoying Carol.

But, it was only a few episodes later when the rest of the family went out within minutes of each other. Sam died because he wouldn’t shut up during a walker herd and Jessie died because she couldn’t let go of his hand.

Shortly after, Ron’s vendetta against Rick/Carl ended when Michonne plunges her katana through him like a boss. It was a glorious episode.

Of course, this list has the potential to grow with characters like Carol and Daryl who are the sole survivors of their blood family. Thankfully, there are some families who now have additional members (hello Maggie’s baby boy) so all hope is not lost for every family.

It’s the expedited and gloomy circle of life in the apocalypse.
