The Vampire Diaries fans rejoice! CW has officially announced that a spinoff for the show is in the works to star Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin.

The spinoff will actually start within The Vampire Diaries in the episode set to air April 25 according to Entertainment Weekly. The episode in question will focus on Klaus’ return to the French Quarter of New Orleans where he reunites with his former protégé Marcel. The series will focus on the original family including Klaus played by Joseph Morgan. It will also star werewolf Hayley played by Phoebe Tonkin. Fans might also know Phoebe Tonkin for her work on The Secret Circle which was cancelled last year after one season. For now the working title of the spinoff is The Originals.

Julie Plec, The Vampire Diaries executive producer, will write the episode about Klaus’ return to New Orleans. If the show does get picked up for a full series she will become it’s show runner. She’d be joined by Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo as executive producers for the show. It will be produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.

Klaus and the original family are known for bringing trouble to Mystic Falls on The Vampire Diaries and fans seemed to be torn about embracing their characters. What do you think of this idea of a spinoff? Would you rather see the originals on The Vampire Diaries or on their own show The Originals?
