The Vampire Diaries season 5 will hopefully see Grace Phipps back as April, and in a new interview the actress shares her hopes for the character.

While The Vampire Diaries season 4 did a lot to wow us with its various plot and character twists, the biggest question we are left with as we enter season 5 is: so who is April, anyway?

Remember that she does, after all, “Have everything to do with this” – this being the veil storyline, which seems to have been wrapped up.

The hosts of Hypable’s Vampire Hype podcast have spent (probably too many) hours theorizing about what purpose the character could possibly serve, suggesting that she may be a doppelganger or the key to the whole series in some other way, but what does the actress herself have to say about it?

Speaking to Wetpaint, Grace Phipps is happy discuss The Vampire Diaries, although she can’t give a lot of details about what her role will be in season 5.

“The extent to which I am not in the loop is hilarious,” she admits. “I just hope I get to say hi and go work with those people again.”

It sounds like Phipps hasn’t exactly got the call to return yet, but we have to assume that she’ll be back in some fashion – unless the writers have just decided to abandon the floundering side-character.

Phipps adds that she really enjoyed playing “this innocent young girl” in season 4, and taking her through the emotional and physical trauma.

“[She] comes back to town from a boarding school and then all of the sudden [she has] to deal with everything you thought you knew to be false, was such meaty stuff to get to work through,” she says.

Phipps goes on to discuss her love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and reveals that, “I would love to play a vampire.”

What do you think? Will April join the fang-gang in The Vampire Diaries season 5? Or does she have another, greater purpose?
