It was a bit too quiet on the Texan front this summer as The Leftovers season 2 did not return for another summer run. But finally at HBO’s presentation during The Television Critics Association Press Tour, the series not only received an October 4 return date, but an unexpected series regular addition to the cast.
With little information to go on regarding the second season aside from a new location and casting revamp, The Leftovers is as much of a mystery as the event that inspired the show’s premise. Three years after 2% of the globe’s population suddenly disappears, the small town of Mapleton, NY represented a snow globe snapshot of what the rest of the world was going through. People stuck to their routines as normally as possible, others left their families to find themselves, and some tried to suppress their feelings and went a bit crazy along the way.

The Departure was a catastrophic event and Ann Dowd’s character, Patti Levin, found a way to embrace the chaos by choosing never to forget it. The cult The Guilty Remnant, standing as human reminders in front of stores, houses, and schools dressed in all white and not speaking, caused their fair share of trouble for Chief of Policet Kevin Garvey.
As season 1 drew to a close, the penultimate episode left fans rather disheartened. Kevin’s mental state was in flux the entire season and his blackouts resulted in him embracing the urges he tried to suppress, including kidnapping and facing Patti alone in the woods, the result of which led Patti to make a martyr of herself.

Though teased earlier this summer that Ann Dowd would return to the breakout hit series, it seems her involvement is a bit more than a passing glimpse of the cult leader. But how can you revive someone who bled to death with a shard of glass in their throat? Flashbacks? A haunting figment of Kevin Garvey’s mind? Perhaps both! We’ll have to wait until October to find out!
