Prepare to bid farewell to The Good Place.

NBC’s hit comedy series’ upcoming fourth season will officially be its last.

News that The Good Place would be coming to an end came straight from creator and executive producer Michael Schur, who made the announcement on Friday (June 7) night.

According to Deadline, Schur himself broke the news during a panel for the series at the Television Academy in North Hollywood.

In addition, the series’ official Twitter account shared an official statement from Schur further explaining the decision.

As sad as it is to hear that the beloved comedy series will soon be coming to a close, it sounds as though Schur has a good reason for calling it quits despite the show’s popularity.

“After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show,” wrote Schur. “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the place at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons— just over 50 episodes— was the right lifespan.”

In addition to explaining why he’d decided four seasons was enough time to tell the story they set out to tell, Schur hinted that NBC would have been interested in keeping the series going beyond this coming fourth season.

“At the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last,” continued Schur.

The creator wrapped things up by saying that everyone involved with the series looks forward to sharing “a great final season” with fans far and wide later on this year.
