Mary Kate Wiles, star of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and School of Thrones, responds exclusively to Shailene Woodley’s casting in The Fault in Our Stars movie.

Speaking exclusively to Hypable, Mary Kate Wiles responded to Fox’s announcement that Shailene Woodley would play Hazel Grace in the upcoming The Fault in Our Stars movie.

Wiles became a fan favourite for the sought-after role, appearing on fan casting lists, and prompting fans to create a Tumblr petition. She told Hypable: “Yeah, I’m sad. I love that book and I love that part, and I went after it with everything that I had. […] I did everything that I could do, but it just is what it is.”

She thanks the many fans who have offered their support to her, saying, “It was really wonderful to see people rally behind that for me, because I know with this fan base, that’s a role in a story that is so close to them, and I was just really humbled by the fact that people would say that they thought I would be great at that. It’s really cool.”

It was always a long-shot that a relatively unknown actor would be cast as Hazel, but fans can rest easy knowing that they did all that they could. As Wiles herself says, “I knew the chances of that happening for me were pretty slim because I’m not an A-list star.”

A release date for The Fault in Our Stars movie has not been set yet. Josh Boone joined the project as director on February 19. Hypable has it on good authority that Cameron Monaghan has been under consideration for the co-starring role of Augustus Waters.
