Black Lightning is officially gearing up to come to a close over at The CW.

According to Deadline, The CW’s DC series, Black Lighting will officially be ending with its upcoming fourth season.

In a statement announcing the series’ end, showrunner Salim Akil spoke of the importance of bringing the series, which centers on a Black superhero, to life on the network.

“When we first started the Black Lightning journey, I knew Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” said Alik. “The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three season proved what we imagined, Black people want to see themselves in all their complexities.”

Interestingly, word of Black Lightning’s fast approaching end comes hot on the heels of news that The CW is already in the process of developing a spinoff series focused on the character of Painkiller.

Announced just last week, Painkiller will find actor Jordan Calloway reprising his role as the titular character— one he’s played over the course of Black Lightning’s run since its first season.

The spinoff series is set to follow Khalil Payne, a a guilt ridden character who lives with the regret of the havoc he wreaked in his former life out in Freeland City where he was known as Painkiller— a super-enhanced killing machine and known member of Tobias Whale’s gang. In an attempt to bury his past and move on, Khalil settles in a new city called Akashic Valley, but running from his past and starting fresh will be easier said than done.

Black Lightning season 4 kicks off via The CW on Monday, February 8. The first episode of the Painkiller spinoff will serve as the series’s seventh episode of its fourth and final season.
