Danish director Susanne Bier has reportedly been shortlisted to direct the next chapter of the James Bond saga.

With Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes officially not returning for the 25th instalment of the James Bond saga, Barbara Broccoli and co. are on the hunt for his replacement.

As we speculate about whether 007 himself might be played by a woman (Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson and Priyanka Chopra are all great options) or a man of color (Idris Elba remains our top choice!), could we in fact be looking at our first female Bond director?

Not only has The Night Manager allegedly put Tom Hiddleston on the James Bond producers’ radar, but it opened their eyes to director Susanne Bier, as well.

The Radio Times reports that Night Manager director Susanne Bier is among a “handful” of names on the producers’ director shortlist.

If Bier does indeed land the gig, this would also be a good indicator that Hiddleston will in fact be chosen replace Daniel Craig as 007 (despite Sam Mendes claiming that the next James Bond “will not be what you expect”).

Craig, meanwhile, is yet to formally announce his departure. But considering how cynical he was during the promotional campaign for Spectre, as well as the fact that Sam Mendes won’t return to direct him in Bond 25, it’s pretty much only a matter of time.

Susanne Bier would be an interesting pick for the James Bond saga. International audiences will remember that she directed Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in Serena, and before that she helmed Halle Berry’s Things We Lost in the Fire.

Danish audiences will remember Bier’s moving dramedy Love Is All You Need, as well as the dark drama After the Wedding (starring Mads Mikkelsen) and the cult classic Open Hearts. Her versatile and impressive resumé proves that she can do just about anything — and we’d love to see her put a dark-humored, Scandinavian twist on James Bond.
