Summer is winding down, but it’s not too late to take a last-minute Supernatural summer road trip. While you’re out on the road, sleep in style with this Supernatural guide on how to book a motel room.

The Winchesters are no strangers to life on the road. They’ll drive all night to make it to their next case if they have to. However, whenever they aren’t in a rush or they’re working on a case in a specific town, they’re very particular as to where they stay. Not just any motel will do. The motel has to meet all of their requirements when they check in, otherwise they just check right out.

So, do as the Winchesters do on Supernatural and follow these simple tips to booking a motel room.

The motel’s rooms must be themed and/or gaudy.

Just because you’re not paying an arm and a leg to stay in a fancy hotel doesn’t mean that you have to book a gross or unappealing room. The majority of the motel rooms shown on Supernatural have had some sort of theme, like the bowling theme in 1×08’s “Kingpin Motel.” When looking for rooms, shag rugs and ’70s prints are a definite plus.

Walls must have wood paneling or fun wallpaper.

Solid-colored walls are just so boring. Pick a motel that decorates with fun patterns or designs. Whether the walls have a simple geometric pattern or a more abstract design, or they have a relaxed wood paneling, anything is better than a simple painted wall. Especially for hunters who need distractions from work.

Each room must have a festively decorated wall-divider

Who wants to stay in a room that has just four walls? After seeing all of those cool half-shaped walls in the motel rooms on Supernatural, it would be impossible to go back to ordinary architecture. Each wall divider is its own piece of art, both in composition and placement. Plus, they make for a really great hiding spot if you want to scare your friend.

The motel must be near a place that sells or serves pie.

If you choose a motel that is nowhere near a decent location to buy pie, you’ve chosen wrong. Pie should always be one of your highest priorities, no matter if you’re booking a motel room for a few nights or choosing your first home. If you can, try to do a little research about the pie hot spots around town. Otherwise, you’ll just have to hope their “apple pie is freaking worth it.”

When separated from or meeting up with someone, stay at the first motel listed in the phonebook.

This is one of the best pieces advice that Supernatural has given us over the years. If you’re meeting up with someone (presumably another friend) on your roadtrip but aren’t familiar with the area, just make a standing agreement to cross paths at the first motel in the phonebook. If you’re not meeting up with anyone, take this tip on as a personal challenge instead and see how many first-listed motels you can check into during your trip.

“Magic Fingers” are a plus.

When given the option or the opportunity, you should definitely spring for a “Magic Fingers” bed. They’ll shake you up and then rub you down, melting away all of the tension you’ve built up in your body by being on the road all day long. Dean loves booking motel rooms with “Magic Fingers” beds. In fact, they’ve popped up a few times on Supernatural over the years. They’re one of his favorite forms of relaxation and, after just one experience, they’ll be one of yours too.
