Suicide Squad could be the most dark, disturbing superhero movie since Watchmen (but… you know, better), yet the producer says it’ll have a PG-13 rating.

The scene has been set for a vicious, no-holds-barred, gritty romp of supervillain fun: Suicide Squad reinvents the Joker, introduces Harley Quinn, and brings in some of DC’s most vicious characters for deliciously dark shenanigans.

You might imagine something along the lines of Daredevil, or the upcoming Deadpool (which was recently awarded the R rating, much to fans’ delight), but don’t get your hopes up too high — Suicide Squad producer Charles Roven confirms what we’ve suspected: That the movie will indeed get a “hard PG-13” rating.

“The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13,” Roven tells Collider, explaining that they want to keep the DC films consistent in tone, and are therefore aiming to keep them all within the PG-13 rating.

Says Roven, “Because this is a shared universe, at least [that’s] our current thinking… and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes, because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired… that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do.”

We can probably expect Suicide Squad to be, “right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”

This news is somewhat disappointing, especially considering all the tantalizing images and quotes that have led us to believe that DC might try to emulate Deadpool‘s merciless tone.

We know a lot of DC fans are already skeptical about Suicide Squad, and this relatively tame rating probably isn’t doing anything to quell their worries. Then again, Suicide Squad can still be psychologically disturbing, without resulting to nudity and blood spattering.

And it’s not like PG-13 doesn’t allow for anything. It’s sobering to recall that movies full of sex, death and/or violence such as Drag Me to Hell, Alien vs. Predator, The Ring, and of course The Dark Knight trilogy, are all rated PG-13. And Heath Ledger’s Joker managed to be plenty terrifying within that rating!

Do you think Suicide Squad‘s PG-13 rating is a bad sign?

Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer, and stars Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, and Viola Davis. It semi-violently slams into theaters on August 5, 2016.
