Good news for fans of Ernest Cline’s sci-fi novel Ready Player One: the movie adaptation has struck gold, landing Steven Spielberg as director.

Steven Spielberg is back with Warner Bros., after a 14-year old absence. And his first project for the studio, in collaboration with Village Roadshow, is Ready Player One.

Set in a dystopian future, Ernest Cline’s debut novel follows Wade Watts, one of the many humans who escapes the grim reality around him by jacking into a virtual utopia called OASIS.

In the virtual reality, Wade discovers an Easter Egg by OASIS’ creator James Halliday, and begins his quest for the treasure: the inheritance of Halliday’s estate, and control of OASIS itself.

Another interesting aspect to this story is that the OASIS is packed with cultural references from the ’80s (an era Halliday loved), and features several iconic video game characters.

We’ll have to wait and see what brands and characters Warner Bros. can wrangle the rights for. But with Steven Spielberg on board, we imagine this feat has been made significantly easier!

The screenplay has been penned by Zak Penn, who also wrote Avengers and X-Men: The Last Stand.
