Looks like director J.D. Dillard and writer Matt Owens will soon be getting a crack at developing a brand new Star Wars movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director and writer J.D. Dillard and writer Matt Owens have officially been tapped by Lucasfilm to develop a brand new Star Wars project.

Dillard is no stranger to the sci-fi genre. In fact, the filmmaker is best known for writing and directing 2016’s Sleight— a sci-fi action drama centered on a young street magician who turns to illegal activities after his parents die and he’s left to care for himself and his little sister.

Meanwhile, Owens has made a name for himself writing on Marvel series such as Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As with most other Star Wars project, plot details surrounding the movie are being kept firmly under wraps for the time being– as are specifics with regards to which characters might take center stage, where in the galaxy the events would be set in, or what time frame the story might take place in.

Also up in the air for the moment is whether Dillard himself would serve as the movie’s director should Lucasfilm give the project the green light.

In addition, there’s still no word on whether the project would premiere on the big screen or via Disney+.

The fact that it seems as though discussions are still underway with regards to where the film might debut is certainly interesting. At the same time, it definitely makes sense that Disney and Lucasfilm are taking the time to weigh out the pros and cons of theatrical release versus streaming.

Though the last three films in the Skywalker Saga pulled their weight at the box office, the same can’t be said for other Star Wars titles that have hit the big screen in recent years.

Specifically, Disney and Lucasfilm found themselves blindsided by the upset that was Solo: A Star Wars Story, which didn’t attract as many moviegoers as projected.

With that in mind, it makes sense that they might consider a straight to streaming release for future Star Wars titles.

Dillard and Owens aren’t the only two who’ve reportedly got Star Wars movies in the developing stages.

Notably, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is also in the process of developing a movie for the franchise as well.

We’ll be excited to hear what Dillard Owens, and Feige come up with as far as their respective projects go!
