Star Trek is going animated for a brand new comedy series gearing up to hit CBS All Access next month! Here’s what you can expect from Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Titled Star Trek: Lower Decks, the brand new half-hour animated comedy series was officially announced via a press release sent out by CBS All Access on Wednesday (July 1).

So what can fans expect when the animated comedy hits the streaming platform later this summer?

Per the official synopsis for the new show, Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in 2380 and shines a spotlight on the support crew serving the lower deck of the U.S.S. Cerritos— one of Starfleet’s least important ships. Together, crew members Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi will have to navigate their lower deck duties, while also navigating their social lives. A difficult task on it’s own, made even mores by the sci-fi anomalies that come in to play and shake things up even further!

Behind the scenes, Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noel Wells, and Eugene Cordero will lend their voices to the lower deck crew. They’ll be playing Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi, respectively.

Meanwhile, actors Dawn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman will all be voicing bridge crew members. Specifically, they’ll lend their voices to the characters of Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shaxs, and Doctor T’Ana, respectively.

The new series hails from Mike McMahan, who’s credits include the incredibly popular Rick and Morty, as well as Solar Opposites.

On the CBS All Access front, Star Trek: Lower Decks serves as the streamer’s first foray into an animated approach to Star Trek.

CBS All Access is, of course, already home to two other Star Trek series (Picard and Discovery), so their forthcoming animated series seems as though it’ll be a unique way to expand the franchise further on the platform.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres Thursday, August 6 on CBS All Access.
