Marvel president Kevin Feige has always told fans that the new Spider-Man will take place in high school, but now he’s revealed that the studio plans to make the new Spider-Man movies feel like John Hughes’ films.

John Hughes had a great way of depicting high school back in the ’80s, and since Peter Parker will be starting out the first few solo Spider-Man films in high school, it’s a good idea to have Spider-Man kicking it off John Hughes’ style.

Marvel President Kevin Feige recently spoke with Birth.Movies.Death. at an Ant-Man press conference about what we can expect in terms of tone, and he said, “It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,”

He continued, saying, “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us. Particularly at that age, in high school, everything feels like life or death. The tests feel like life or death.”

For John Hughes’ fans, we imagine this is exciting, and with the high school themes that the studio plans on using being such a big part of the new Spider-Man, this could be more unique than we originally expected.

Spider-Man is rumored to be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War alongside Iron Man and Captain America when it hits theaters on May 6, 2016. He’ll then appear in his first standalone movie, and at least two or three more Spider-Man films.

There was a report recently that suggested the first solo Spider-Man movie will be titled Spider-Man: The New Avenger, which will hit theaters July 28, 2017. This would lend itself incredibly well to Marvel’s movie lineup, as Spider-Man will likely fill the slot of a dead Avenger once he makes his way onto the big screen.

Tom Holland was recently cast as the new Spider-Man and we think having a young actor with actual high school problems will be interesting. We look forward to seeing what Marvel and Sony do with the character now that he’s been cast.

Excited about ‘Spider-Man’ going in the direction of John Hughes’ films?
