With The Avengers: Age of Ultron hitting theaters in the U.S. this week, a new report suggests that the first solo Spider-Man movie will do its best to link the webslinger with the Avengers.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is the Marvel movie on everyone’s radar this week, but now that Spider-Man is back with Marvel (at least partially), it looks like Sony plans to use the Avengers any way it can to bring fans to the new Spider-Man franchise, which will star a young, new actor.
The rumor says that the first solo Spider-Man movie will be titled: Spider-Man: The New Avenger. We like the way it rolls off the tongue, and it definitely lets new fans know that Spider-Man will become a part of the Avengers’ film franchise at some point. We’re also sure a title like that would help boost the film’s box office pull.
An interesting Avengers: Age of Ultron after credits scene was leaked recently, which featured Spider-Man, and the rumors started spinning that he was going to somehow show up at the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. After the video stayed on YouTube for more than a few seconds, we were pretty sure it wasn’t real, and then director Joss Whedon revealed during a press conference in London that the clip was 100% fake.
Everyone assumes that Spider-Man will show up in Captain America: Civil War, as Spider-Man is a central character in the comic storyline, but Civil War starts filming next week, and we’ve yet to find out who will be playing the new Spider-Man within Marvel’s cinematic universe. The Captain America: The Winter Soldier sequel already has Iron Man in it, and we recently found out that Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her Avengers: Age of Ultron role of Scarlet Witch in the film as well.
There have been reports that Marvel and Sony are currently testing actors for the role, including Nat Wolff and Asa Butterfield, but there’s not been a single word confirmed from the studio or Marvel president Kevin Feige. We have to imagine this is the most sought-after role in years, as he’ll be joining the most successful movie studio in the world. He’ll be playing Spider-Man in the solo movies, but more importantly, the actor will get to join the massively talented Avengers: Age of Ultron cast in the future films.
So, now that we have at least a rumored title for the first solo Spider-Man movie, we wonder if he’ll be replacing someone who may die in a future Marvel film. Fans should remember that Captain America’s first movie was titled Captain America: The First Avenger, so replacing him with Spider-Man after Spider-Man: The New Avenger would definitely be a way to get him right in the middle of the action.
It’s exciting to think about, but until we hear from the studio it’s all just a rumor. Spider-Man is a very interesting and unique part of the Avengers, and after we find out which actor will play the webslinger, we imagine which films he’ll be in will begin to surface.
It’s also important to remember that he’ll be joining the Avengers’ films about the same time Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the Marvel cinematic universe as Doctor Strange. Things could start to get very exciting when these new characters’ movies start coming out.
