Five actors were recently named as the main actors which were being considered for Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, and now it looks like Asa Butterfield has the best shot at being cast in the highly coveted role.

Sony has been preparing to make test offers to multiple young actors last week, with a decision reportedly being made in less than two weeks. While the previous report named five actors, today we’re hearing Asa Butterfield has the role all but wrapped up according to sources.

Nat Wolff was thought to be at the head of the pack right before, after his role in The Fault in Our Stars, and he’ll also be in John Green’s next film adaptation Paper Towns. but according to one unnamed source, “Marvel has liked him [Butterfield] since the start.”

It’s an interesting situation, as Sony is essentially making the casting decision, while Spider-Man will first appear in Captain America: Civil War alongside Iron Man and Captain America when it hits theaters on May 6, 2016. So, while Sony is making the final decision, the actor’s first appearance as Spider-Man will be in a Marvel movie.

There was a report yesterday that the first solo Spider-Man movie will be titled Spider-Man: The New Avenger, which will hit theaters July 28, 2017. This would lend itself well to Marvel’s movie lineup, as Spider-Man will likely fill the slot of a dead Avenger once he makes his way onto the big screen.

While the source to this rumor isn’t even close to being the most solid, we think Butterfield is a great choice, as he has a promising acting future. While Ender’s Game wasn’t a massive hit, he is clearly talented, and certainly has that young Peter Parker look that they’re going for. We may find out in the next few days after Avengers: Age of Ultron smashes box office records who will be joining their team next.

The first solo Spider-Man is set to be directed by Drew Goddard and will hit theaters on July 28, 2017, and there’s a lot of evidence that Spider-Man will show up in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016. We look forward to finding out if Asa Butterfield will play Spider-Man, and how big of a role he’ll have in Captain America: Civil War.
