After a solid opening weekend, Sony is moving ahead with a Ghostbusters sequel. Fuck yes.

Despite online hate campaigns and threats to boycott the film and/or sabotage its ratings, the Ghostbusters reboot with Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy is actually doing really well.

Not only is Paul Feig’s hilarious comedy picking up solid ratings, but Ghostbusters brought in $46 million during its opening weekend — not a smash hit, but certainly no failure, either.

Especially when you keep in mind that this is the highest grossing live-action comedy in more than a year, topping last year’s Ted 2 with more than $10 million. More than half its audience was female, which also represents an important market that Sony needs to tap into.

And Sony certainly isn’t complaining; as quoted by The Guardian, Sony worldwide marketing and distribution president Josh Greenstein proclaims himself “ecstatic with this opening,” saying, “We have successfully restarted an important brand. We have lots of room to run in the coming weeks as the big comedy in the marketplace.”

Speaking to The Wrap, Greenstein also strongly indicates that a sequel is coming, saying, “While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.”

We can’t wait to see where the franchise moves from here. Hopefully McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones, Wiig and Chris Hemsworth can all reprise their roles in the sequel, because we’ve already fallen in love with the new team.
