Star Trek 3 has been fighting its way into production since the franchise lost its director to Star Wars, but now actor/writer Simon Pegg is co-writing the film’s script alongside Doug Jung.

After signing Fast & Furious director Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3, fans thought the film was finally set to begin production. But Deadline is now reporting that actor Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the film, will co-write the script with Doug Jung.

Simon Pegg is well-respected in the writing game, as he’s penned multiple films, including Shaun of the Dead and more recently The World’s End. Doug Jung is the creator of Dark Blue, and has previously written for Bad Robot and Paramount, which is reportedly how he got the Star Trek 3 job alongside Pegg.

Simon Pegg is a massive Star Trek fan, and geek in general, so we’re excited to hear he’s on board to pen the third film’s script. However, the report suggests that the two writers are just starting the script, which means it may be a while before we hear any details concerning the sequel.

Despite changing directors, and writers, Paramount has given Star Trek 3 a July 8, 2016 release date. This is reportedly an attempt to link the film with the franchise’s 50th anniversary. We look forward to finding out more about Star Trek 3 as Pegg and Jung work on the script.
