Update (12/23): With their director now in place, Paramount has given Star Trek 3 a July 8, 2016 release date. This keeps it timed with the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Star Trek 3 has run into a few issues since J.J. Abrams passed on the project so he could direct the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but then director Roberto Orci signed on to helm the project. Later we found out Orci had left the project, which left the director’s seat wide open once again.
After reports that Paramount Pictures were looking at five directors to replace Orci as the director of Star Trek 3, it’s now being reported by Deadline that Justin Lin will helm the project.
It’s unknown as to whether Star Trek 3 will be delayed due to Roberto Orci’s recent departure, but this news that Lin will be taking over so quickly makes us think they’re planning on keeping their previous schedule now that they have a new director.
Justin Lin is unlikely to have been at the top of anyone’s list to direct Star Trek 3, but he’s a solid director, who has proven to studios that he can pull in very large audiences. His Fast & Furious films have been wildly successful, and he is fairly well-known for his unique style.
Not much was known about Star Trek 3 prior to Robert Orci’s departure from the film, but we did know he was working on a script with writers Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. There were reports that Star Trek 3 would see the Enterprise crew going much deeper into space than the first two films, and that William Shatner would have a role in the film.
While he wouldn’t be our first choice, Lin is definitely an interesting one, and we look forward to seeing how the film is developed now that it’s in his hands.
