Original Story (8/20/19):

Netflix’s Selena: The Series may have just found its star.

It’s no secret that a scripted television series detailing the life of Mexican-American music icon, Selena has been in the works since last year at Netflix.

Now, it sounds as though the highly anticipated series may have just found its leading lady.

Vulture reports that The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos has officially been cast as the legendary Queen of Tejano music.

Since the project was first announced back in December 2018, one thing Selena fans have been hoping for was that Selena: The Series would make it a point to cast an actress of Mexican descent in the leading role.

Though Jennifer Lopez won the world over with her portrayal of Selena in Gregory Nava’s 1997 biopic, the fact that Lopez is Puerto Rican and not Mexican definitely ruffled quite a few feathers when her casting was originally announced.

Luckily, Serratos definitely ticks that box. The Los Angeles native, whose previous credits also include the The Twilight Saga, is of both Mexican and Italian descent.

More importantly, she likely has the blessing of the Quintanilla family, who is set to be involved on the Netflix project behind the scenes.

Specifically, the “Amor Prohibido” singer’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., have both signed on to serve as executive producers on the show.

Other producers on the project include Jamie Davila, Rico Martinez, Simran A. Singh, and Mioses Zamora. In addition to his executive producing duties, Zamora will also serve as writer on the series.

Selena: The Series is being described as a coming-of-age story that’ll delve into the life story of the legendary Tejano star’s life, up until her tragic death in 1995 at the age of 23.

Currently, the plan is for the story of Selena’s life to play out over the course of two seasons, though it’s unclear as to how many episodes each season will be comprised of.

There’s no word on when we can expect the show to premiere via Netflix, but production is scheduled to start next month in Mexico.
