The Pokémon Sword and Shield Gyms may just have a leader for each Type, a first for the RPG series.

If you’ve always wanted a Dark-Type Gym Leader, your wish may come true in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Game Informer published a cover story on Sword and Shield, where the game’s 18 Gyms were confirmed. The relevant quote reads as follows:

According to director Shigeru Ohmori, the gyms are split into a system resembling major and minor sports leagues. “There are 18 different types of gyms in the story, and depending on the version, which gyms are in the major league are different,” he says. “For example, in Sword, the fighting-type gym will be in the major league, but in Shield, the ghost-type. The idea is that every year, the Galar region is playing and which gyms make it into the minor league versus the major league changes.”

Typically, there are only 8 Gyms in any given Pokémon region, with each focusing on only one Type. While Sun and Moon didn’t have proper Gym Leaders, it seems as though Sword and Shield are doubling their Gyms.

In the cover story, it’s also revealed that Pokémon not present in the current region may return in future games. Series producer Junichi Masuda states that including every Pokémon ever in every game started to limit the development team’s ability to include all of the new features that they wanted to. “We really spent a lot of effort deciding which [Pokémon] would best fit the setting of the adventure and the features that we wanted to implement,” says Masuda.

Lastly, autosaving and EXP Share-all will be turned on at the start of the game, and HMs are still absent (thank God). Pokémon Sword and Shield will arrive on Nintendo Switch November 15, 2019.
