Penny Dreadful: City of Angels dropped its first teaser trailer, giving us our first look at Game of Thrones ’ Natalie Dormer as a shape-shifting demon.

The original Penny Dreadful series abruptly ended its three season run on Showtime in 2016, and it wasn’t until two years later, in 2018, that the network announced that it was working on a spinoff series.

That spinoff series became Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which brings back series creator and showrunner John Logan, but has moved the setting from 19th century London to 1938 Los Angeles and taken the focus from 19th-century London and Victorian-era public domain characters like Frankenstein’s monster, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dorian Gray, and instead fixed it onto characters from Mexican-American folklore.

According to Showtime, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels should be considered the spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful series and takes place in a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.

Check out the first trailer and official synopsis below!

When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (played by Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (played by Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

In addition to Daniel Zovatto and Nathan Lane, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels stars Game of Thrones alum Natalie Dormer as Magda, a shape-shifting demon, Rory Kinnear (who played Frankenstein’s monster in the original Penny Dreadful) as Dr. Peter Craft, Piper Perabo as his unhappy wife Linda, as well as Kerry Bishé (of Halt and Catch Fire) and Jessica Garza (of The Purge).

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will premiere on Sunday, April 26 at 10/9c on Showtime.
