Outlander is one of the biggest breakout series of last year, and now fans have more ways of immersing themselves in tie-in products.

Many fans had high hopes for what they might be able to purchase to show the world their Outlander love. We even saw a few prototypes at Toy Fair in 2015. Some of these prototypes materialized, such as the note cards. Others remain elusive, which is probably a good thing. (Jamie Fraser beach towel with the wrong motto, anyone?)

Starz is currently partnering with companies like Walkers for food products such as a shortbread line. They even give out recipes like a Shortbread Tini, for some extra fun.

Some of the tie-in merchandise started out rocky, like the collection of wine glasses in groups of threes. Yes, you read that correctly, threes. Fortunately, Starz has recently upped their game with a line of apparel and jewelry.

Much of the new jewelry line that is featured on the Starz website is made by Allison of New York City’s RockLove Jewelry. Allison is not only a designer, but a fan of the novels and the Starz television series. Allison spoke with Hypable about the latest addition to the jewelry collection, The Stag Brooch.

How did you get interested in the Outlander novels?

I don’t remember exactly how I got my hands on Outlander. I was a teenager reading anything sexy historical fiction or fantasy. Lots of Jacqueline Carey, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Philippa Gregory, but I do remember that my childhood best friend Amanda and her older sister were great Diana Gabaldon fans, and we most likely traded paperbacks, giggling over the raciest passages.

How did you make the jump into fandom artisan?

I’ve been collaborating with authors, bands, and artists since I first started RockLove in 2007. Together we would create jewelry merch in which proceeds contributed to recording time, road tours, or charities of their choice. My big leap into mainstream fandom began when Star Trek commissioned RockLove to handcraft premium sterling pieces which we debuted in October of 2014 at New York Comic Con.

There are various jewelry pieces mentioned throughout the Outlander series. Which is your favorite?

I’m a fan of both the book series and the Starz series, and we fans know that the jewelry differs between the two! My favorite book piece is, of course, the Stag Brooch, described piecemeal in a few different chapters within the first novel. The boar tusk bracelets Murtagh gifts to Ellen have always been a close second.

What drew you to making the Stag Brooch?

My parents, sister, and I reenact in Renaissance Faires (they still do, when I moved away from home, I switched to Pennsic War) so we have always had celtic knotwork around the house: clothing, tankards, yard decor, jewelry. Loreena McKennitt and The Chieftains CDs playing 27/4. Had a celtic triskel heart necklace that I wore every day in sixth grade until I accidentally dropped it down a heating duct. The Stag Brooch description is rather vague, so after decades surrounded by knotwork designs, I would envision the pin differently each time I read the passages.

How did you decide on the materials?

Sterling is my favorite metal — it’s grounding, feels smooth and malleable while still durable, and is tantalizingly shiny when polished. Though brass or bronze would have been cheaper, traditional 18th and 19th century Scottish jewelry was mostly sterling silver so historical accuracy clinched the decision.

What is your favorite element in the Stag Broach design?

Though it might not seem like it, the most difficult part of the piece was the phrase “two leaping stags, backs arched and heads meeting to form a circle.” The stags needed antlers, but where would they fit? How could their backs arch while their legs continue around the pen-annular circle? Various sketches had the heads starting at the center of top of the circle, with less flaring, while others had the snouts pointing the opposite direction and antlers going across their haunches. My favorite element is feeling that YES, after all that switching and swapping, the final design seems so sensible, I can no longer picture it any other way!

Are there any other pieces perhaps coming up?

I do hope to make more designs. RockLove has been asked to make romantic more “inspired by” pieces rather than screen-replicas, which is both flattering and a greater challenge. I’ve produced designs like the Craigh Na Dun Necklace that encompass the mystery and passion of the Outlander world. I’ve seen some of the top secret Season 2 assets but nothing more than photos, so I’ll be glued to my screen April 9 just like everyone else!

What are you most looking forward to in season 2?

Costume designer Terry Dresbach is fabulous (check out our interview with Dresbach). I can’t wait to see the all the devastatingly decadent court garb! I know we’ve glimpsed The Red Dress, but I’m sure there will be plenty more buckled shoes and embroidered corsets to keep us swooning!

Outlander is back for season 2 this Saturday on Starz. Enjoy it wearing your new jewelry while sipping a Shortbread Tini.
