Upcoming Outlander merchandise is something that both book and TV fans will enjoy.
At their booth, Factory Entertainment unveiled a variety of Outlander products at the NY Toy Fair 2015. Their plans will eventually include pillows, towels, stationery, lithographs, drink bottles, jewelry replicas and costume accessory replicas. According to their press release, they have entered into a multi-year licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television to produce a wide range of products from the Starz Outlander series.
Jordan Schwartz, President and CEO of Factory Entertainment stated, “We’re huge fans of the series and a line of licensed merchandise is the perfect opportunity for us to create quality products that appeal to every type of Outlander enthusiast, whether Highlanders or Sassenachs, there’s something captivating about a love story that spans centuries. It’s a privilege for us to be able to honor this wonderful saga.”
The Factory Entertainment reps at the booth were enthusiastic about the products, and they have clearly, based on our discussion, watched the series and read the books. They are keen on getting products out that fans will love. Some of the products will be replicas of jewelry and props. Other items will be more whimsical like the Jamie Fraser beach towel with the Clan MacKenzie slogan on the bottom: “Luceo non uro (I shine not burn).”
As for the planned roll-out of the merchandise (it should be noted the products are still in development, all images are of rough prototypes), certain items are in progress for this summer, but others will be released in time for the 2015 holiday buying season.
The three items of note that we could see up close, and are pictured above, were the flask drinking bottle, pop-up note cards, and the beach towel. Factory Entertainment also wanted to do a plaid beach towel, but due the intrinsic fabric composition, that design didn’t quite work out. Nonetheless, they still have plans for pillows down the road since that fabric works better with plaid prints.
Interestingly enough, they have had people asking if there will be a Black Jack Randall towel. This baffled the creators given the nature of Black Jack’s character. We suggested that it might have more to do with fans of the actor who plays Black Jack, Tobias Menzies, than the character himself.
When asked if they had consulted author Diana Gabaldon, they stated that they’ve been able to show her some things, but not all owing to time constraints. They felt that she seemed amused by the idea of fans being able to wrap themselves up in Jamie Fraser. It’s by no means a skimpy beach towel.
