A new Once Upon a Time season 2 spoiler has us wondering: how exactly is Ruth, Charming’s mother, going to be important?

E! Online has revealed the following, highly intriguing snippet of information: in the first four episodes of the second season, we’d better keep our eye on Ruth (played by Gabrielle Rose). “Something is going to happen to her,” they write, “but we can’t say if it’s a good or a bad thing.”

Ruth only appeared in one episode of season 1, “The Shepherd,” in which we learned how Charming came to switch places with Prince James and assume his identity.

His mother had made a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to give up one of her twin boys to the King, who desired a son, and when Charming reached adulthood, Rumpelstiltskin returned to offer his mother’s financial security in return for him taking his dead twin’s place.

We still don’t know Charming’s real name, but with Ruth returning, it is likely that we will within the first four episodes of season 2. Will the character resurface in Storybrooke, or is this development going to take place in a flashback? Perhaps there was more to the deal she made with Rumpelstiltskin than we initially thought, or the ring she gave Charming before he left.

All intriguing questions that we can’t wait for the show to answer! Once Upon a Time returns on September 30, at 8/7c on ABC.
