Nickelodeon and Paramount are rounding up the classic Nicktoon characters for one big movie.

Deadline reports that the characters of Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monsters, and The Angry Beavers — amongst others — will appear together in a movie titled NickToons penned by Jared and Jarusha Hess (who created Napolean Dynamite and Nacho Libre).

Paramount, who’s handled all of Nickelodeon’s theatrical releases including The Rugrats Movie and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, “hopes” that NickToons will “spark a franchise,” according to Deadline.

Nickelodeon’s last attempt at crossing over two Nicktoon series was in 2003 when the Rugrats joined up with The Wild Thornberries in Rugrats Go Wild. As kids we all loved the idea — two of our favorite TV shows in one, and in a movie theater!

This super mash up movie is a great idea. Those of us who grew up with these classic Nick characters will probably turn out to see this Avengers-style film, won’t we? It’ll hold the nostalgia appeal plus the “how the hell can all of these characters be in one movie” appeal.

Details concerning how exactly all of these characters will appear in one story are still scarce. Will there be a cartoon overlord who wrecks havoc on NickToon-ville? Will all the characters be sulking in their irrelevance when the movie opens, leading them to go on a journey in which they try to become cool in the eyes of kids again?

In recent months Nick has become interested in reviving their old cartoon series. In October Nick launched a late-night programming block featuring all of their beloved ’90s shows (both cartoons and live-action), and in November we learned Nick was working on a new Hey, Arnold! TV movie.

One of Nick’s goals with these ventures is to introduce the old shows to new generations who may be watching them with their parents — who watched the shows themselves in the ’90s.

What’s old is new again. We just hope the new stories live up to the originals.
