A new promo, more stills, and new sneak peek offer up even more tantalizing clues about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1.

With just a week to go until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 hits our screens, a few further bits of media have been released to tease us with possibilities. The episode, titled “Shadows,” promises to introduce new faces and new relationships – while those that are familiar may have changed irreparably.

A new promo for “Shadows” incorporates a few bits of new footage, including our first blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie.

Set to the unexpectedly gung-ho strains of “Highway to Hell,” the new promo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 seems oddly chipper about the fact that most of the characters appear to be sort of miserable. Our fractional glimpses of Fitz and Simmons seem particularly ominous, as does the fact that apparently, somebody is a terrible driver.

But hey, at least it’s rock and roll.

Marvel has also shared new stills from key scenes in “Shadows,” expanding on an earlier crop of images. The first is a behind-the-scenes shot of director Vincent Misiano chatting with actors Lucy Lawless (Agent Isabelle Hartley) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter); the rest of the stills offer hints at the high stakes and humor of the premiere episode.

It’s fantastic to see another shot of Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, looking fabulous as usual. The visual reference flash to the past makes us wonder if that ominous HYDRA signage is from the present or the past – but at this point, we have no way of knowing for certain.

It’s also nice to see that Agent Billy Koenig (Patton Oswalt) has kept his spirits up, in spite of losing his brother/clone/something at the end of last season. The multiple versions of Koenig get a shout-out in a new clip from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1, which can be downloaded for free on iTunes.

The clip focuses on Skye, Agent Triplett, Director Coulson, and some eerily familiar symbology. Though we won’t disclose the details, it’s sobering to see how several relationships have changed since the screen went dark on season 1 – and we can’t help but wonder what that might mean for the future.

The official synopsis for “Shadows” emphasizes the frailty of these connections in a world shot through with distrust.

“Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources,” the summary says, “but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1, “Shadows,” will air on Sept. 23 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
