A new month means more Netflix material to help you wind down from adulting. In May 2019, Netflix is bringing a solid mix of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and Netflix Originals to keep fans tuned in.
The list is long with seemingly infinite choices, but there are a few buzz-worthy shows that are standing out from the crowd as well as old-school favorites to give you a hefty dose of nostalgia. And there’s a little something for everyone — dark dramas, comedies, teen horror, and post-apocalypse sagas.
These are the movies and shows you should add to your Netflix queue immediately:
‘Final Destination’
There’s nothing like a 2000’s teen scream flick to make you feel the feels. Final Destination freaked fans out back in 2000 with a story about premonition, survivors’ guilt, and what happens when Death decides you can’t cheat fate.
It spawned five additional films and comic books, but none of them can capture the suspense, shocking kills, and thrills of the original. Final Destination hit Netflix on May 1.
‘Zombieland’
A ton of zombie parody/comedy films are far from funny, but this one will make you laugh with an insane storyline and a list of survival rules that actually make a ton of sense.
It’s been almost 10 years since this film dropped and a sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, is on the way this fall so now is the perfect time to either re-watch this movie or get into it for the first time. Zombieland arrived on May 1.
‘The Rain’
Who knew raindrops could become so terrifying? Netflix’s Original series The Rain is gearing up for season 2 on May 17 to continue the story of two siblings who are on a journey to find their scientist father several years after a rainborne virus wipes out most of humanity.
The show’s location spans across Denmark and Sweden, which gives a different perspective of the apocalypse than what most U.S. fans are used to and there’s a deeper psychological bend to the storyline about human nature. Season 1 is only eight episodes, so it would be an easy catch-up to get on board for the latest season on Netflix.
‘Dead to Me’
This Netflix Original comedy puts a dark spin on a story that is reminiscent of Grace & Frankie with two polar opposite women who become friends over unlikely circumstances. It’s packed with a ton of twists, some which are much more predictable than others, and stars Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, and James Marsden, who all have impeccable chemistry together on screen.
Plus, it’s an easy albeit puzzling watch packed with great one-liners, powerful moments, and surprisingly thoughtful observations about life. Each episode will leave you salivating for the next chapter and you can get through it all in just a little over five hours. Dead to Me is available for Netflix fans on May 3.
‘Scream’
Yeah, there’s a lot of throwback movies along the same vein this month. Scream is perhaps one of the most influential horror movies of the mid-90s that sparked a renewed mainstream interest in the genre after a few lagging years.
Now, the infamous cult thriller is available for millennial fans to relive again and new viewers to discover Ghostface. It’s still as clever, fun, and suspenseful as ever and already ready for your viewing pleasure.
