We’re going to get serious about New Girl again, and talk about our disappointments with Jess and Ryan’s relationship.

If you read our last article about the Jess and Ryan relationship, then you know that we weren’t pleased with the way the series has been handling it. Their “I love you” moment didn’t feel sincere in the slightest. And we’re not really getting this relationship. It seems superficial, with Jess in awe of a British beauty. Despite Julian Morris (who plays Ryan) being a lovely male specimen, the couple lacks chemistry. Especially when compared to Nick and Jess, who we will ship until the end of time.

In the latest episode of New Girl, entitled “The Crawl,” fans saw Ryan and Jess trying to celebrate Valentine’s Day. When Ryan brings up the subject of moving in together, Jess totally panics. Which makes sense, as they’re still quite new to their relationship. Although they get along, it doesn’t seem as though they have a real connection. The biggest feat that they’ve had to deal with is jealousy at the school. And that mainly just affects Jess’ career, not so much Ryan.

But then Jess seems to talk herself out of the original panic that she felt. After talking with Cece, Jess decides she actually does want to move in with Ryan. This is because the only reason she can come up with not to is his old toaster. But what about her gut feeling? Once again we are left with a feeling that this relationship is being rushed and forced. How are fans supposed to enjoy that!?

At the end of the episode we learn that Ryan has been offered a job at another school. The good news is that it’s a promotion as a headmaster. The bad news is that it’s over in England. Even though Ryan is reluctant, Jess is adamant that he take the job. But we can already feel the tension between the two. It’s obvious that the writers are setting this up to be the reason the couple will tear apart.

This might sound picky, but we also take issue with this. Having them break up because of a long distance relationship seems like a cop out. Jess’s break up with Nick was very emotional, which the fans connected with. This seems like it will be a disappointing end to a disappointing relationship.

What could the writers have done to make us like this relationship, you ask? Every couple has struggles, and the writers should have shown us this with Jess and Ryan. Draw out the relationship a bit more, and don’t rush them through each step so quickly. And passion, passion, passion!

What do you think could have made Jess and Ryan’s relationship better on ‘New Girl’?
