The Scream season 2 finale just wrapped, but fans already want to know if there will be a Scream season 3. We examine the evidence.

Spoilers ahead. If you haven’t watched the Scream season 2 finale yet, it’s best to turn back now.

Okay, yes, the second season of Scream just wrapped about 12 hours ago, but don’t kid yourself — you already want to know if it’s going to get a season 3.

As of this writing, nothing has been announced yet. Scream wasn’t in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and that’s usually when properties like to drop renewal or cancellation news. The fact that the show wasn’t at SDCC is slightly concerning (they were there last year), but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for them.

In fact, we know it’s not the end because we’ll be getting a Scream Halloween special in October. You can follow the link to get our first — and very brief — sneak peek of the episode.

In terms of content, there’s definitely still room to keep exploring Lakewood and the town’s bloody past, which always seems to find a way to bleed into the future.

For one, Kieran — Piper’s accomplice and the season 2 Killer — is not dead. Emma let him live so he could spend the rest of his life in jail. But criminals are wily creatures, and there’s a possibility he could end up escaping in order to torture Emma and Audrey once more.

A more plausible situation, however, is hinted at during the end of the finale, when Kieran gets a phone call in jail. We’re led to believe it’s Brandon James ringing him up, and he’s not pleased Piper and Kieran were donning his mask without permission. We also see a masked figure waiting for Kieran above his jail cell, and it’s probably only a matter of time before Kieran gets what he deserves.

I can’t actually decide what the purpose of the Halloween special is. On the one hand, it’s possible that this is really just a one-off episode. Perhaps the creators had too much story to tell, and they wanted to wrap up any loose ends in this extra episode before they dove into a completely new arc for season 3.

On the other hand, I find it equally possible — and if I’m honest with myself, probably more so — that they’re using this Halloween episode to wrap up the loose ends so fans won’t be driving themselves crazy over unanswered questions if the series gets cancelled.

Trust me when I say I don’t want Scream to end. I’ve enjoyed season 2 as much as I enjoyed season 1, and the loss of old characters and the introduction of new ones have added a dynamic to the show that I’ve greatly enjoyed.

That said, the Scream season 2 numbers haven’t exactly been out of this world. MTV, and all other cable channels, don’t need to pull in the huge audiences required by networks like ABC, CBS, or NBC. But they do need to prove that enough people are watching in order to warrant the cost of making another season.

Like I said, nothing has been officially announced and we don’t know exactly why we’re getting a Halloween special this year when we didn’t get one after season 1 aired. We’ll have to wait for the special to see what else is revealed and whether or not there’s room to keep the story going.

If any news breaks regarding the Scream Halloween special or Scream season 3, you can rest assured we’ll bring it to you as quickly as possible.
