Prepare to say goodbye to Mr. Robot — the series’ upcoming fourth season will officially be its last.

News of USA Network deciding to pull the plug on Mr. Robot comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who was first to report the news on Wednesday (August 29) morning.

The series, which stars Rami Malek as a cyber security engineer who also midnights as a vigilante hacker, was picked up for a fourth season in December of 2017.

USA originally ordered an eight episode order for season 4. Now that the forthcoming season will be Mr. Robot’s last, sources are reporting that the network has bumped their order to 12 episodes total.

As sad as it may be for fans of the series to learn that the show is ending, they can take comfort in the fact that showrunner Sam Esmail feels as though the time is right to wrap things up.

In a statement released to THR, Esmail spoke of realizing that next season would be a good time to tie things up, and additionally thanked the cast, the crew, and of course the show’s passionate fanbase for their support.

“Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending,” said Esmail. “Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can’t wait to share this exciting final season with you.”

In addition, the showrunner took to Twitter to address fans personally tweeting, “Excited to show you guys the final chapter in Elliot’s journey. It’s going to be sad to say goodbye to Mr. Robot, but it’ll be sadder to say goodbye to all the fans. Thanks for hanging with us throughout the years and cannot wait to share the conclusion with all of you.”

Fans looking forward to catching the end of Elliot’s journey will have a bit of a wait before the show returns to USA Network. Season 4 of Mr. Robot isn’t set to air until sometime in 2019.
