There are so many Christmas movies out there that we love, but only a few have achieved the status of “most quotable.”

When we say that there are a lot of Christmas movies that we love, we mean that there are a LOT. You have your classics, your animated classics, your modern classics, your made-for-TV classics… There are just so many to love, aren’t there?

But, while some Christmas movies may be lovable, they may not necessarily be quotable. For instance, you don’t see people walking around quoting White Christmas on a daily basis. The most you ever hear people say is “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” (and that’s technically because of the famous song, not so much the movie). Yet, it’s one of the movies that we have to watch every December.

By no means are we saying that other Christmas movies aren’t quotable (because boy do we love quoting all the things), but these five movies in particular are the most quotable (and they’re our absolute favorites to quote).

‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is honestly like the Mean Girls of Christmas movies. The whole film is a collection of quotables. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a line in this move that hasn’t been made into some sort of gif or meme or art, not to mention printed on clothing. It’s one of the best Christmas movies of all time because it’s one of the most quotable. And it’s quotable because it’s just downright hilarious. From Cousin Eddie emptying his waste into the sewer to Aunt Bethany’s classic dinnertime blessing. The whole movie is a gem.

(Also, it may or may not be our goal year after year to memorize Clark’s rant from the end of the film and rattle it off whenever we feel like it. We haven’t been able to do it yet, but there’s always next year!)

The most famous quote: “Merry Christmas! Shitter was full!”

Our favorite quote: “Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where’s the Tylenol?”

Our mom’s favorite quote: “Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, kiss my ass. Kiss his ass. Kiss your ass. Happy Hanukkah.”

‘Elf’

Elf is truly the Christmas movie of our generation. We know the whole movie top to bottom. We can turn it on at any point of the movie and immediately start spewing lines. It’s a talent, really. Anyway, once Christmas season hits, you can always count on never having to go a day without hearing a line or two from Elf. Whether it’s your friend calling you a “cotton-headed ninny muggins” or a random person on the street screaming “SANTA! I KNOW HIM!,” we know that you can’t help but be delighted to hear people quoting Elf. We know we can’t.

The most famous quote: “Buddy the Elf! What’s your favorite color?”

Our favorite quote: “I’m in a store and I’M SIIIIINGIIIIING!”

Our mom’s favorite quote: “I just like to smile, smiling’s my favorite!”

‘A Christmas Story’

We can’t count how many times we’ve been told “You’ll shoot your eye out.” It’s the line that this movie is honestly really known for and it’s the line that, from where we stand, has brought so many people to love this movie. It’s a Christmas staple really. We can’t help but seek it out every day when we browse through our TV guide. Unfortunately, it looks like TBS isn’t doing their 24-hour marathon again this year on Christmas day, so we’ll be holding our own. Care to join us?

The most famous quote: “You’ll shoot your eye out.”

Our favorite quote: “I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!” (Because it’s just so fun to say over and over again and see how many people know that we’re joking!)

Our mom’s favorite quote: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” (As if it could be anything else.)

‘The Santa Clause’

It’s hard to remember Christmases before The Santa Clause came out. We’ve been quoting this movie as long as we can remember. Even when it’s not Christmastime, certain words act like triggers and have us reciting lines no problem. Our favorite thing to do during the holidays is watch this movie with friends and just quote the movie as it goes. We can’t get enough of it. And, honestly, who could blame us?! Tim Allen (circa Home Improvement) is SANTA CLAUS. How could it not be fun to quote?

The most famous quote: “If you put on the suit, you’re the big guy.”

Our favorite quote: “We’re your worst nightmare. Elves with attitude.”

Our mom’s favorite quote: “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! When I get home, I’m getting a CAT scan!”

‘Home Alone’

Because this Christmas movie is really more like a movie set during Christmas, we get the luxury of watching and quoting this movie all year long (not that there’s anything wrong with watching movies like Elf and Christmas Vacation all year long). Its “evergreen” nature is just one of the reasons why this is one of the most quotable Christmas movies. Another reason is that it’s just so memorable. Some of Kevin’s lines are just so… unique for someone his age. He’s just so smart and his intelligence really shows whenever he taunts the robbers or speaks to adults.

The most famous quote: “Keep the change, ya filthy animal.”

Our favorite quote: “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” (Though this quote happens multiple times during the movie, we’re referencing the one that happens after Kevin puts aftershave on his face.)

Our mom’s favorite quote: “Keep the change, ya filthy animal.” (Of course, our moms say this with the nicest tone possible.)

Which of these Christmas movies do you find to be the most quotable?
