With dozens of great movies coming out in 2016, it looks to rival 2015’s incredible release slate. We’ve chosen 16 of the most highly anticipated movies of the new year and want you to vote in our poll for the most anticipated movie of 2016.

2015 has been an amazing year for film, culminating with the exciting release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which broke loads of records, including becoming the fastest movie to ever take in a billion dollars at the box office. Jurassic World broke the same record this year, when it achieved the billion dollar feat in just 13 days, but The Force Awakens came in at 12 days (and has yet to hit theaters in China).

Creed proved Michael B. Jordan is a force to be reckoned with, and that Rocky still has a few punches left, with Sylvester Stallone receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role in the boxing sequel. In addition, Quentin Tarantino’s new western The Hateful Eight will certainly end the last week of the year on a high note.

But now we’re looking toward 2016 by choosing 16 of the most highly anticipated movies hitting the theater in the new year. The following movies are in order of their release date, so make sure to vote in our poll at the end and let us know which of these 16 you’ll be looking forward to the most in the new year.

‘Deadpool’

Release date: February 12, 2016

Deadpool might officially have the best marketing we’ve ever seen, with Ryan Reynolds starring as the deadly superhero with a hilarious attitude. The film has been in the works for years, trying to get funding, and ended up having some test footage leaked online.

After that, it all began. The studio saw just how excited people were to see an R-rated superhero movie, and their marketing has been genius. The movie looks amazing and will break up the Marvel universe superheroes we’ve gotten used to over the last few years.

It’ll be a nice change of pace to see an R-rated superhero as he kicks some ass and throws a few F-bombs around as the unique superhero gets his shot on the big screen. Deadpool hits theaters February 12.

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’

Release date: March 25, 2016

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be one of the first highly anticipated movies to land in theaters in 2016, and while many fans are split over what we’ve seen so far, it looks like the start of something that could be very exciting.

Despite the film’s name, we’ll be seeing our first major on-screen female superhero with actress Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman in the film alongside Batman and Superman. They’ll team up against the film’s villain, which was revealed in the latest trailer.

This will also be the first time Ben Affleck suits up as Batman, which should be a big deal for those who thought the actor might not have been the best choice for the role. We shall see when the beginning of the Justice League storyline hits theaters on March 25.

‘Jungle Book’

Release date: April 15, 2016

Disney’s first live-action Jungle Book movie trailer showed some incredibly realistic CGI of the animal characters we grew up adoring. The first footage was shown to a select audience back in August during Disney’s D23 Expo, and the VFX impressed everyone for being so polished and lifelike.

When the first trailer landed online this past September, it had fans young and old excited to see so many of our favorite animated characters brought to life as real-life VFX characters. The film was directed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau, and includes a stellar cast such as Billy Murray and Idris Elba voicing some of the main animals.

Disney’s live-action film is going to be a visual masterpiece with living creatures having achieved true photorealism. After seeing the official trailer, it had us even more excited to see the wonderful story and amazing cast voicing animals from our childhood when The Jungle Book premieres on April 15.

‘Captain America: Civil War’

Release date: May 6, 2016

Possibly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Captain America: Civil War’s first trailer set the world on fire. Cap and Bucky’s relationship revealed in the trailer turned the internet into unending memes and GIFs of Stucky shippers, but more importantly the movie looked great.

While Iron Man’s inclusion may cause the film to feel more like an Avengers’ sequel than Captain America 3, it just doesn’t matter because the movie is going to put nearly a dozen of our favorite Avengers on the big screen battling each other. This could actually end up being Marvel’s best movie to date, especially with the introduction of Black Panther and our first MCU Spider-Man sighting.

We cannot wait to see Cap and Bucky battling Iron Man in an emotional battle between friends. This movie might trump all other superhero movies to date, with The Winter Soldier’s directing duo (the Russo brothers) back in the directing seat for the film’s May 6 release.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

Release date: May 27, 2016

X-Men: Apocalypse’s first trailer showed our favorite mutants on a new timeline in which the villain Apocalypse is on his way to taking over the world. We see that the most powerful mutant in Marvel’s X-Men universe, and while some fans have concerns over his appearance, we imagine he’ll be fairly impressive on the big screen.

Apocalypse is seen awakening after thousands of years, and he’s upset with what the world looks like. He decides to recruit a team of his own powerful mutants, which includes Magneto (Michael Fassbender), as they plan to cleanse the Earth of mankind and create a new world order.

This film has so many incredible actors that it’s stuffed to the brim with talent, so we have a hard time believing it won’t be a great ride as long as Apocalypse works well as a villain, and the most powerful mutant of all-time when the film hits theaters on May 27.

‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’

Release date: May 27, 2016

The Alice in Wonderland sequel has been a bit of a mystery, but considering how successful the first film was, we imagine the second will have fans just as excited. The first trailer gave us some great looks at Alice as she goes on her mission to find the Mad Hatter.

Alice spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit, Absolem, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter, who is not himself.

The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends — and enemies — at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. Whether it’s good or not remains to be seen, but it should look amazing on the big screen on May 27.

‘Warcraft’

Release date: June 10, 2016

After years of delays, Warcraft is finally going to be seen on the big screen by the millions of game fans (and friends they drag along). World of Warcraft has been one of the most popular online games in the world for over a decade, and when the first trailer finally arrived, fans weren’t disappointed.

It’s been a long time coming, and while it feels like the World of Warcraft film adaptation directed by Duncan Jones should have come out a few years ago, the first trailer looked great even to non-gamers. Being able to blend the real world with the CGI world perfectly, now that the technology is capable, helps as enemies unite to take on the film’s villain.

With humans teaming up with orcs, and worlds colliding and being conquered, it looks like this might be the video game film adaptation that finally breaks the track record of terrible film adaptations. While the list for video game adaptations that have failed at the box office is long, Warcraft doesn’t seem to have that same vibe. We look forward to finding out if it can still become a massive hit when it lands in theaters on June 10.

‘Now You See Me 2’

Release date: June 10, 2016

The magic-filled Now You See Me starring Jesse Eisenberg hit theaters back in 2013, and ended up taking in $350 million worldwide. Lionsgate was impressed by the film’s worldwide reach and decided to set a sequel in motion.

While all moviegoers weren’t that impressed by the first film, it was a profitable film centered around magic and incredibly talented actors. Now You See Me 2 has an ace up its sleeve: Daniel Radcliffe. He alone should bring to the sequel a portion of the Harry Potter fan base, and despite the magic element dipping into his past films, we think he’ll be great in the sequel.

One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their mind-bending spectacles, the Four Horsemen resurface only to find themselves face to face with a new enemy who enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet when the film appears in theaters on June 10.

‘Finding Dory’

Release date: June 17, 2016

Possibly the sequel everyone has been waiting for since the cutest lost fish ever fell into the sea. Finding Dory is the sequel to Finding Nemo, and Ellen DeGeneres is back to voice the forgetful and hilariously cute Dory.

It’s been a running joke of Ellen’s to talk about getting the sequel made, but now it’s finally happening. The film takes place one year after Finding Nemo ended, and with the success of Finding Nemo, we can’t imagine Finding Dory won’t find a massive audience.

Pixar rarely disappoints with their incredible animated features, and Finding Dory shouldn’t be any different when it hits theaters on June 17.

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’

Release date: June 24, 2016

Independence Day: Resurgence came out of nowhere. Not many people knew it was even happening (especially with so much Jeff Goldblum) until the first trailer landed on December 14. The trailer actually looked intriguing enough, and has some other actors we’re interested in seeing on the big screen.

Without Will Smith it’s going to be difficult to overtake the original, but the sequel looks exciting and bigger than ever. Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth looks to have a large role as well, so it’ll be interesting to see if the sequel is able to hold up to the original.

They found actor Bill Pullman wherever he was hiding since playing the president in the first film, and he looks to be in a large part of the sequel as well. This is one film we didn’t think we’d want to happen, but now we can’t wait for its release on June 24.

‘Ghostbusters’

Release date: July 15, 2016

The Ghostbusters reboot/remake features some of the most talented and hilarious women in Hollywood, but for some reason had some original Ghostbusters movie fans worried. However, with this cast and director, we can’t imagine it not being one hell of a blast to watch. All the Easter eggs from the original films alone should be worth the ticket price.

Ghostbusters has director Paul Feig at the helm and stars Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), with Cecily Strong, Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, Matt Walsh, and Neil Casey.

The remake also features cameos from original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts. It should be insanely hilarious, and give us an exciting story we haven’t seen since the ’80s when the Ghostbusters remake hits theaters on July 15.

‘Star Trek Beyond’

Release date: July 22, 2016

Star Trek Beyond’s first trailer was released during all the Star Wars madness, so it went pretty much unnoticed, but the first two from J.J. Abrams were well-received, and with the crew heading out on their long voyage, we hope to see them very far away from Earth.

Star Trek Beyond will continue to have an incredible cast, which includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. And the best part is the new cast, which includes Kingsman: The Secret Service’s Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba as the film’s main villain.

The trailer showed the crew on a distant planet fighting on and off the ship, including a few rides on a dirt bike, so we expect to see something new with director Justin Lin taking over for J.J. Abrams when the film hits theaters on July 22.

‘Suicide Squad’

Release date: August 5, 2016

Suicide Squad is a new take on the superhero film, essentially flipping it on its head. It is being helmed by David Ayer, who directed the WWII film with Brad Pitt titled Fury. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.

Despite the early critiques of Jared Leto’s Joker look, he’s looked very creepy in the most recent images from the film’s trailers, and we have a feeling his final look on screen will be intense. He was reportedly in character at all times, and many actors were afraid to even approach him while he was doing scenes.

Suicide Squad looks to be a unique take on the superhero genre, and has an ace in the hole: Jared Leto as The Joker. Suicide Squad will see some amazing actors team up when it hits theaters on August 5.

‘Doctor Strange’

Release date: November 4, 2016

Marvel finally figured out how to get Benedict Cumberbatch in one of their films, and luckily they waited until Doctor Strange.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct Marvel’s Doctor Strange, with Jon Spaihts penning the script. Doctor Strange’s official synopsis reveals that before he met the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange was an unlikable and egotistical neurosurgeon.

That all changes when a car accident limits Strange’s use of his hands, sending him on a maddening quest for a miracle cure. This origin story introduces the magical and mystical realms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With an interesting story and Cumberbatch in the lead role, we can’t wait to get our hands on this film when it hits theaters November 4.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’

Release date: November 18, 2016

Fantastic Beasts stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, and the movie is directed by four-time Harry Potter director David Yates, and produced by Harry Potter series producer David Heyman. If that wasn’t enough already, the script has been written by J.K. Rowling herself.

The film is set to be a massive success, due in no small part to Potter fans dying to see some more magic on the big screen from J.K. Rowling’s brilliant world. They’ve been able to make this feel new and exciting due to the fact that it will reveal what the wizarding world would have been like in America during the 1920s.

As we learn new words from America’s wizarding world (like No-Maj), we can’t wait to see what Newt’s adventures will be like in Fantastic Beasts when it hits theaters on November 18.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’

Release date: December 16, 2016

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the fastest film to $1 billion at the box office, which means fans still want to see new Star Wars movies. Star Wars: Rogue One will be the first spinoff, and we’re interested to see how well it’s received.

Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Ben Mendelsohn, Rogue One already seems like a hit. Filming began in September, and the film is set between the prequel and the main Star Wars trilogies.

Following a group of rebels as they set out to steal the plans for the original Death Star, this story sounds even more exciting than The Force Awakens did. Rogue One will be the true test as to whether fans are in this for the long run, and right now it sounds like it’ll be a true battle as the director says the story is in the title: Star Wars.
