Modern Family celebrated their Valentine’s Day episode in style last night, and with romance in the air things didn’t go quite as well as hoped…

Modern Family once again brought back fan favourites Clive Bixby and Juliana for the fourth season’s Valentine’s Day episode, with what was hoping to be another memorable night for Phil and Claire’s alter egos. But, it wasn’t to be.

After arriving at the hotel, Clive turns up the heat, chatting up Juliana, before Claire tells Phil she isn’t feeling very well. Slipping in and out of character, it’s clear that Claire is seriously unwell even as Phil tries to play it down and, as Claire stands up, she collapses in the middle of the Hotel bar. Claire is then rushed to hospital and things are not looking good already.

Claire finds out in hospital that she has had a small heart episode due to a hereditary condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White-Syndrome. Phil takes a comical spin saying it was his fault that Claire had a minor heart issue to due all of his seductive moves.

Once Claire is discharged from Hospital her and Phil head home to try and recover the evening and have a romantic evening. Just as they begin to settle down, the kids bring back a few friends and try to have a house party. Phil takes charge and orders the party to end before telling the children about what happened to Claire. They freak out completely thinking Claire has had a heart attack.

Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria are desperate to have an evening together after being so preoccupied with Manny and Joseph for several weeks. Gloria is so turned on by Jay at anything he does and can’t wait to get her hands on him. It isn’t to be though, as Jay is up to neck in jobs that keep coming thick and fast. First off, a man turns up to baby-proof the house by installing stair-gates, and then Manny pops up wanting to be taken to a Valentine’s Party with a “secret admirer.” Jay is comically frustrated wanting Manny out of his house as soon as possible, before getting so annoyed with the newly installed stair-gate, he rips it off the staircase and pounces into the bedroom with Gloria.

However, the real stars of the show came in the form of Cameron and Mitchell. Mitchell is a little depressed he isn’t as fun as he used to be so he decides to drink as much as humanly possible and throw a “Broken Hearts” party for some friends. We don’t see any of the party aside from the mess in the house afterwards, but this isn’t what was so brilliant. As Mitchell walks through the house trying to retrace his drunken memories finding all kinds of stolen ornaments belonging to the neighbours, in walks Dylan thanking Mitchell and Cameron for letting him move in. Dylan had been recently kicked out of his house by his Mom and he is eternally grateful for the act of kindness that Mitchell has provided. However, with Mitchell trying to work out what promise he had made with Dylan, Dylan lets slip that it was actually Cameron who had promised him that he could move in. Mitchell is livid.

Dylan, however, as we’ve seen throughout the years always comes up with a surprise. He cleans the house top to bottom and this pricks Cameron’s ears thinking that he could be a really great housemate. However, Cameron and Mitchell both realise that they both don’t want Dylan living with them but can’t find the courage to let him know. And, in comes Lily to save the day. Lily starts telling Dylan that, “You can’t live here, get out!” Dylan accepts Lily’s demands and moves back home.

Despite all the antics, Cameron and Mitchell try to rekindle a Valentine’s day event for the pair of them by trying out an “idea” Mitchell had heard of. The episode ends with Cameron and Mitchell in the same hotel that Clive Bixby and Juliana have used for years, roleplaying with their alter egos! Only in Modern Family could this happen…
