When Cameron takes charge of a school production, Manny comes to the rescue to save the day after challenging Luke, but who leads the production in last night’s Modern Family?

Cameron has been given permission to look after Manny and Luke’s school’s production. Manny is absolutely desperate to land the lead role after Marcus drops out. Cameron turns his attention to Luke after he catches him singing to a young boy who is questioning his ability to paint a wall. Cameron points out in a conversation with Manny that Luke is the ideal replacement for Marcus. Luke can sing, he knows the show and, “has a certain theatrical madness in his eyes.” Manny pleads and heads to see Luke.

Dylan is back on the scene with Haley, and announces his new aspiration in life is to run a T-Shirt design company, sporting one of his own T-shirts with the quote, “Moo, I’m a horse” in a speech bubble from a cartoon lion. I guess, this reflects Dylan’s natural ability when it comes to intelligence. Claire isn’t too impressed and awkwardly changes the conversation. However, where Dylan comes into his own, when he quietens down Fulgencio, after Claire is beginning to become frustrated by the crying.

Jay catches some space from Gloria by joining Phil playing golf. Mitch joins the pair of them, with guest star Nathan Lane, playing Pepper, one of Cameron’s ex-partners. Mitch is a little apprehensive when asked if he wants to join them golf. But, secretly, Mitch has been secretly playing golf and improving his game. Confidently, he steps up and produces the biggest divot ever witnessed, with Jay sarcastically commenting, “Wow.”

Pepper lays into Mitch and wants him to improve his game. Whilst at the same time, Phil is just awful at golfing, flailing about in the sand when suddenly, he hits a perfect shot towards the tee. “You’re the worst thing that’s happened to golf since shorts!” shouts Jay, and then Mitch’s practise pays off with a beautiful shot. “Suck it!” shouts a determined, Mitch.

Meanwhile, Luke is stunned that Cameron wants Luke to step in and takeover the lead of the production. Manny appeals to his lighter side and welcomes him to the group of, “Theatre Geeks.” Power-tripping Cameron meanwhile, strolls across set before asking Luke to become the lead of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s, “Phantom of the Opera.” Luke declines, and walks off. Manny converses with Cameron and announces, “he’ll do it.” Cameron was about to take the role on himself! But never mind.

Gloria heads off to visit a Psychic with Alex. Alex, completely doubts the powers of the Psychic, and completely leads Gloria on by agreeing with the Psychic’s made up stories in order to please her. A presence joins the room, that elates Gloria. Gloria believes she is speaking to her Grandmother, “I miss her so much…tell her that I love her.” Gloria is completely convinced.

Mitch starts pressuring Jay in the final hole of the back 9, to make the final putt. Jay putts it in, and decides he’d love to play golf again with the Mitch, who usually is the anti-sport member of the family. Pepper thinks Jay is just trying to build his confidence, and appeal to his emotions to try and get Mitch to miss his final putt. Mitch cooly sinks the golf ball into the hall, pointing and laughing, before back-pedalling for a high-five with Pepper. Jay was serious though about playing again, so maybe this isn’t the last we see of the Modern Family bunch playing golf?

Manny steps up in full costume as the Phantom in a rehearsal, but Cameron is hot on his case demanding huge improvements. “It’s no secret that you were my first choice, or my second…but just copy Luke.” Manny is secretly furious, but not with Luke, but with God! As the house begins to fill, Phil bumps into his Dad who has come to see the production. Phil breaks down when he sees Luke singing, whilst Manny watches from behind the curtain. Luke transforms into the Phantom and puts on a fantastic performance.
