Mindy Kaling is gearing up to give Velma Dinkley of Scooby-Doo fame the close-up she deserves.

On Wednesday (February 10), HBO Max announced that it is officially in the process of developing a brand new adult animated comedy series centered on the often-unsung hero of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc., gang.

Titled Velma, the series is set to shine a spotlight on the brains behind the Mystery Inc., operation.

Interestingly, the animated comedy series is aiming to put a new twist on the titular character by focusing on Velma’s origin story. Per the series’ official logline, the show will “unmask the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

Mindy Kaling is on board to lend her voice to Velma, the titular bespectacled smarty pants. In addition, Kaling is also set to serve as an executive producer on the project.

Shortly after HBO Max announced the series, Kaling took to her Instagram to share a few more details with regards to what we can expect from the animated comedy.

“I’m so excited to be voicing this iconic character! Velma will struggle to navigate the pitfalls of high school, her budding sexuality, and a serial killer intent on murdering every popular kid in town,” wrote Kaling in the caption of her post. “Sounds epic…can’t wait!”

Others involved behind the camera on the project include Charlie Grande, Howard Klein, and Sam Register, all of whom will serve as executive producers alongside Kaling.

HBO Max has given Velma a ten-episode series order to start, though still unclear is precisely when we can expect to see the show debut via the streaming platform.
