Update (10/8/19): Looks like Hamilton alum Daveed Diggs is the next big star set to go under the sea in Disney’s live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

According to Variety, actor Daveed Diggs is currently in final negotiations to lend his voice to Ariel’s (Halle Bailey) faithful (yet fretful) crustacean pal.

Diggs joins a star-studded cast which includes the likes of Awkwafina (Scuttle), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), and Jacob Tremblay (Flounder).

The film will mark a bit of a reunion for Tremblay and Diggs specifically. Previously the actors played teacher and pupil in the 2017 family drama, Wonder.

Tremblay isn’t the only star Diggs will find himself re-teaming with on The Little Mermaid.

Also signed on to help bring the Disney animated classic to life is none other than Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda.

As Disney fans who’ve been following production news closely might know, Miranda has been working with original Little Mermaid composer Alan Menken on new songs for the live action adaptation.

Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, there’s currently no word on when we can expect to see the film hit theaters.

Update (7/1/19):

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Room star Jacob Tremblay and Crazy Rich Asians actress Awkwafina are officially in talks to join the cast of Disney’s upcoming live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

Both Tremblay and Awkwafina would find themselves bringing two of Ariel’s beloved sidekicks to life. For Tremblay that would mean voicing Ariel’s loyal pal Flounder. As for Awkwafina, she would be lending her voice to Scuttle the seagull.

Both actors are the latest notable names to be linked to director Mary Poppins Returns helmer Rob Marshall’s upcoming adaptation of the 1989 Disney animated classic.

Just last week we heard word that Melissa McCarthy was officially in talks to assume the role of the evil, voice stealing sea witch herself, Ursula.

It definitely sounds as though the cast of Disney’s upcoming live action The Little Mermaid is coming together quite quickly. That being said, there are still tons of major roles yet to be cast.

We’ll be curious to find out more about who gets tapped to help bring one of Disney’s most beloved films to life!

Original Story (6/28/19): Melissa McCarthy might be gearing up to play one of the most notorious villains in Disney history.

According to Variety, actress Melissa McCarthy is currently in talks to join the cast of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

If she signs on, McCarthy would find herself squaring off on the silver screen against Ariel herself as the evil sea witch Ursula.

As it stands, McCarthy is the first name we’ve heard with regards to who will be tapped to bring The Little Mermaid to life. With McCarthy rumored to be joining the cast, we’re sure it’s only a matter of time before more casting news comes out with regards to the live action adaptation.

As with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, the plan is for the live action Little Mermaid to feature songs from the 1989 animated classic.

Famed composer Alan Menken, who created the music for the original animated feature, is on board to return to help out with the music for Disney’s adaptation.
