Wes Ball, director of The Maze Runner, has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to adapt the illustrated Danish fantasy book Fall of Gods.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the crowdfunded illustrated novel from Denmark-based Mood Studios is getting a Hollywood makeover! Maze Runner director Wes Ball, who is also helming The Scorch Trials, has been chosen by 20th Century Fox to bring this Norse Mythology-inspired story to life.

Fall of Gods is an attempt by Danish creators Rasmus Berggreen and Michael Vogt to re-claim the increasingly Americanized Norse heroes. After both Marvel and Rick Riordan have had their hands on them, it was time to bring Thor, Odin, Freya and the rest back to Scandinavia.

The story follows Vali, a human warrior who loses his love and sets out on for Jotunheim (the realm of the giants) to seek revenge.

“For years he has lived far from society, tending to his farm and trying to forget the battles he fought… and the crimes he committed,” the book’s synopsis reads.

“But one day his love disappears, and he must set out to find her. He will once again have to face the creatures of Jotunheim and the powerful Aesir. Suddenly, the man he thought he had buried deep down inside has risen to the surface once more… and he comes seeking vengeance.”

Wes Ball is a great fit for this rich, visual story, which seeks to re-imagine the ancient world of Norse Mythology. Ball has a background in digital and visual effects, having worked on several behind-the-scenes documentaries and short film projects.
