Tom Ellis has closed a deal to return as the titular character in the popular Netflix show Lucifer, making a season 6 renewal for the show much more likely.

According to Deadline, the Tom Ellis negotiations were lengthy and difficult, but Netflix was able to broker a deal that would have the lead Lucifer actor return.

Though the upcoming fifth season of Lucifer had been billed as the final season, Netflix had begun talks with series producer Warner Bros. TV earlier this year about another installment of the comic book drama beyond it. Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, who have been steering the show, quickly closed new deals for another season.

With star Tom Ellis on board along with the rest of the cast, sources close to the show say that Netflix is expected to proceed with the pickup.

The show will still need to finish filming season 5, which was postponed — along with nearly all live action productions — in March, reportedly with about four days left to shoot. The initial plan had been for Lucifer to go back into production in September on Season 6.

Lucifer is based on the comic book characters created by Neil Gaiman for DC’s Vertigo Imprint, and stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Scarlett Estevez and Kevin Alejandro.

The series is a mix of dark comedy, police procedural and supernatural love story and follows the charming and devilishly handsome Lord of Hell himself, Lucifer Morningstar, as he helps LAPD detective Chloe Decker find and take down criminals.

Lucifer began on Fox, but was canceled after three seasons. The resulting fan outcry convinced Netflix to then rescue the series, extending its run by two seasons. Last summer, the streamer renewed the show for a fifth and “final” season — and even extended that final season by six episodes.
