Tick, Tick…Boom!, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s upcoming Netflix film and directorial debut, has found its leading man in Andrew Garfield.

Update 11/5/2019: Lin-Manuel Miranda has added some more talented actors to the cast for his Netflix adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick…Boom! While Andrew Garfield is set to play the lead, three new casting announcements have been made.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains, Vanessa Hudgens, who has been knocking it out of the park in new musical adaptations like Grease Live! and Rent: Live, has been added to the cast, though we don’t know what role she’ll be playing yet.

Additionally, Alexandra Shipp and Robin de Jesus will also be joining Miranda’s cast, also in two as-yet-unnamed roles. Robin de Jesus is a prolific stage actor who has been nominated for Tony awards and will star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Boys in the Band. Meanwhile, Shipp is an actress and a singer, but she might be most recognized for her work as Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.

This cast is quickly filling with amazingly talented individuals, and we can’t wait to see more of Miranda’s vision for Tick, Tick…Boom!

Original Story 10/30/2019:Lin-Manuel Miranda has quite a lengthy entertainment resume.

He’s, of course, well-known for bringing the story Founding Fathers to the Broadway stage and making it cool with Hamilton, is currently having his first major Broadway musical In the Heights adapted into a major motion picture with Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu at the helm, starred in Mary Poppins Returns and will star in the upcoming HBO series His Dark Materials.

Now the talented triple threat is about to add one more job to the list: director.

Miranda announced earlier this year that he would be making his directorial debut with an adaptation of the Jonathan Larson (of RENT fame) musical, Tick, Tick…Boom! As reported then, after an intense bidding war to win the rights to the Miranda-helmed project, the streaming giant Netflix ultimately won out.

And though the rumor was that Andrew Garfield would be starring in the production, there’s been no confirmation of that casting — until now.

Deadline broke the news earlier today that the erstwhile Spider-Man had landed the lead role in the upcoming film which boasts Lin-Manuel Miranda as director and Steven Levenson, the Dear Evan Hanson playwright who wrote Fosse/Verdon, as its writer.

Tick, Tick…Boom! is the autobiographical story of its writer, Jonathan Larson. Andrew Garfield will be playing the character Jon, an aspiring theater composer who waits tables in New York City while writing Superbia, which he hopes will be the great American musical that will finally give him his big career break.

Jon is feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspiration. Meanwhile, Jon’s best friend and roommate Michael has given up on his creative dream and has taken a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is preparing to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety, wondering if his own impossible dream is worth the cost.

A release date for Tick, Tick…Boom! and further casting details have yet to be announced.
