Actor Leonard Nimoy has passed away at the age of 83, and his friends in Hollywood, and President Obama, share their condolences through social media.

The beloved Star Trek star died of “end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” at his Los Angeles home early Friday morning. He was hospitalized earlier this week after experiencing severe chest pains.

Nimoy was best known for his role as Spock in the Star Trek TV and film series in the late 1960s. The actor continued to reprise the role of Spock throughout his life, giving many of his adoring fans a chance to meet their idol. Most recently, he made an appearance as Spock in director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and his 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.
