If there’s one subscription box that fans of graphic novels and indie comics need to check out, it’s Landfall Freight! New graphic novels, fun goodies, the world’s best lollipop… Landfall Freight has it all.

About Landfall Freight

Created with the intent of making it easier and less intimidating for girls and women all over the world to discover graphic novels, Landfall Freight is the first graphic novel subscription box geared specifically towards ladies. The goal of the box is for it to be as exciting to receive (and as much of an adventure) as making landfall after being away at sea. (The word “landfall” in their name also happens to represent the home planet of a bad-ass character in Saga, which is pretty awesome.)

Each month, Landfall Freight subscribers receive a box that’s themed around a recently published graphic novel. In addition to the graphic novel, each box includes a single-issue comic or another graphic novel with a similar theme, as well as a few artsy goodies, a bookish item, and the world’s best lollipop (a caramel apple lollipop, of course!).

Landfall Freight works as a month-to-month subscription that’s $29.99/month (plus shipping). The good news is that they ship internationally! While the shipping for some places can get pretty pricey (what with graphic novels and trades being slightly hefty), Landfall Freight does, unlike a lot of other subscription boxes, ship to most countries.

One of the cool things about each Landfall Freight is that they support female creators, with the majority (if not the entirety) of the content in each box being female-created. Female writers, illustrators, designers, artists… you get the idea. Landfall Freight is lady-friendly in more ways than one, which totally rocks.

Though the boxes are geared toward women (specifically ladies 16+, given that a lot of featured graphic novels have more mature content than younger audiences can handle), anyone and everyone of age can (and should) subscribe.

April Landfall Freight subscription box review

Landfall Freight? More like Landfall “Fright”! April’s Landfall Freight theme was “The Night Is Dark…,” which included a bunch of awesomely creepy and spooky goodies. As someone who has an affinity for the spooky (minus horror flicks) and whose favorite holiday is Halloween, I couldn’t wait to unbox my Landfall Freight.

That being said, I wasn’t the least bit disappointed with the April haul. It’s not often where I’m equally excited about every single item that’s in a subscription box. In fact, I’ve already started planning where I’m going to display and use all of it (lollipop included).

But let me back up here and actually show you what was in the box. Let’s start with the goodies! The first thing that caught my eye as I lifted the black tissue paper wrapping was a winged skull “Memento Mori” metal keychain. I’m a huge fan of el Día de los Muertos and sugar skulls, so I don’t need to tell you how much I love the skull’s design. I can’t wait to attach it to my key ring and have it be a great daily reminder for myself of the fleetingness of life.

Speaking of reminders, the April Landfall Freight box also includes a fun print that marries a floral design with a slightly spooky, weird phrase, “Stay wild, moon child.” The box’s item overview calls it a “Witchy Words Art Print,” which couldn’t be more fitting considering it made me think of witchcraft from the moment I saw it. I look forward to finding a frame for my new print and displaying it proudly. It’s nothing short of beautiful.

The two other themed goodies are wonderfully gothic and dark romantic, which is right up my alley. Some of my favorite literary works fall under those genres, so imagine my surprise to see two stickers with quotes from two of my favorite authors. Tianna, one of the brilliant minds behind Landfall Freight, designed them and did a wonderful job. The chosen quotes and line work in the design are fantastic.

The other gothic piece is a bookplate with a creepy spinster design. Every month, the ladies behind Landfall Freight include a bookplate or bookmark of some sort in their box (along with a caramel apple pop), and this one fits the theme really well. I look forward to putting it into my copy of Edgar Allan Poe’s works.

That brings me to the most important items in the box: April’s graphic novel. The whole April box is themed around Harrow County by Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook. This Southern gothic fairy tale-like story follows a girl named Emmy who finds out that she has a creepy connection not only to the woods surrounding her home but also the creepy monsters and creatures that live there. With a premise like that, it’s easy to see why Landfall Freight themed a whole box around the book.

Because the second volume of Harrow County recently hit store shelves, April’s box included both volume 1 and volume 2! The first volume only collects the first four issues or so, so I’m glad that I’ll be able to keep reading once I reach the end of issue #4. Though I wasn’t familiar with the series before opening my April Landfall Freight box, I’m looking forward to checking it out. It gives off a sort of season 1 Supernatural vibe rather than a horror movie-like vibe (which I’m judging solely from the artwork and the premise) and just seems like something I’d like.

Landfall Freight is a subscription box that I’ve been following pretty much since it first came out. Though it’s taken me a bit to try it out, I’m so glad I took the plunge. This graphic novel subscription box has made a subscriber out of me and I’m hoping it’ll make a subscriber out of a few Hypable readers too. If you’re looking to discover new female-friendly graphic novels and be gifted a bit of fun swag along the way, be sure to check out Landfall Freight. You’ll be glad you did.
