Jared Leto, fresh off of Suicide Squad, has joined the long-awaited (?) sequel to Blade Runner.

Much like this summer’s Independence Day: Resurgence, the Blade Runner revival isn’t a remake, but rather a sequel set decades after the original. The movie is even bringing back original star Harrison Ford for the next chapter of the story.

While Ridley Scott won’t be directing (that honor has gone to Denis Villeneuve), he’s been heavily involved with the story, which leaves us somewhat optimistic about this latest franchise revival.

Now, Variety is reporting that method actor Jared Leto has joined the cast. He’ll star opposite Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, and Mackenzie Davis.

Blade Runner (1982) was a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The movie was set in the then-distant future of 2019, and starred Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a ‘blade runner’ tasked with assassinating so-called ‘replicants’ (androids that look like humans).

But when he came across a replicant named Rachel, he found himself drawn to her. His own hatred of replicants and artificial intelligence turned out to have a surprising source, which led him to question what it means to be human.

Not much is known about the Blade Runner sequel, other than that it’ll take place a few decades after the original.

We don’t know what role Jared Leto will play yet but, for his sake, we hope they use more of his footage in the final cut of the film this time than Suicide Squad reportedly did.

The Blade Runner sequel will premiere October 6, 2017.
