The long-awaited Blade Runner sequel is set to star Harrison Ford, but with Ridley Scott unavailable to direct, the torch might be passed to Denis Villeneuve.
For a while there, it really seemed possible that Ridley Scott would be able to direct the Blade Runner sequel.
The ageing filmmaker directed the original back in 1982, and has been contemplating a sequel ever since. But while he’ll serve as producer on Blade Runner 2, it was revealed Thursday that he will not be back in the director’s chair.
Instead, French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve has entered negotiations, and seems a likely candidate. Villeneuve is based in Quebec, and most of his films are in the French language.
However, you might remember his 2013 thriller Prisoners, which stars Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Villeneuve also directed Gyllenhaal in the 2013 movie Enemy.
His latest film is set to be released in September 2015. Sicario stars Emily Blunt as a young FBI agent who joins a secret CIA operation to take down a Mexican cartel boss.
The Blade Runner sequel script has been penned by original writer Hampton Fancher, and newcomer Michael Green. Ridley Scott has recently praised the script, calling it “very good.”
While it might have been interesting to see Blade Runner 2 pick up where the first left off, seeing as it was set in 2019 Los Angeles, Ford’s character has obviously aged as much as the actor, and the movie will therefore be set several decades into the (already fictional) future.
